DURING DAN CARLIN’S Hardcore History podcast, “King of Kings II,” he discussed combat mindset and his perception of normal. I found this interesting coming from a man who loves the study of battle, particularly the study of what literally takes place on the battlefield: the hand-to-hand brutality that is ancient warfare, with combatants sweating and bleeding with little to no support from their country or chain of command. Carlin made several statements about the normality or lack thereof when it comes to those with the stones to commit acts of brutality against an enemy they have come face-to-face with on the battlefield. IT CAN BE INTIMIDATING to walk up to an airline ticket counter with a gun case in tow. Many of us have heard that we need to arrive two extra hours in advance for additional TSA scrutiny, but unless you’re departing an airport notorious for long lines, that is largely unnecessary for frequent flyers. My first line of advice is to approach the counter with a friendly demeanor. Present your identification and boarding pass, declare that you are traveling with a firearm, and then standby for instructions. Airline agents are at times uninformed or misinformed on their company’s current policy or TSA’s regulations, which is why I keep a printed copy of the rules in my carry-on bag. .32-20 S&W HAND EJECTOR Q: I am in possession of a Smith & Wesson revolver chambered in .32-20. No model number is marked anywhere on the pistol. Serial number on the butt is 131XXX. On the cylinder swivel and bottom of the barrel is 9261. It is nickel-plated with a 5-inch barrel length. Barrel is top marked, “Smith and Wesson-Springfield Mass USA. Patented February 8, 08, Sep 14, 09, Dec 28, 14.” I would like to know the vintage and value of this piece. The only cartridges I can find are marked .32-20 rifle cartridge, which are necked-down cartridges. I am advised that these are not safe to shoot through this pistol. WHEN IT COMES TO DEFENSIVE PISTOLS, one size definitely does not fit all. Size, shape, weight and functionality are factors that prompt a customer to purchase one gun versus another. Understandably, when a person hands over hard-earned money to a dealer, they’re hoping to get a handgun that feels just right based on perceived needs. Opting for the biggest gun chambered in the largest caliber may seem like a good idea, but after carrying it for a day or two, many will eventually question their choice.
