This month’s reading piece is focused on semiquavers, or ‘16th-note’ rhythms, which are so called because there are 16 evenly-spaced notes in each bar. Sixteen notes is a lot of information to take in so we usually split them up into four smaller groups of four notes, which are counted ‘1 e & a, 3 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a ’. As you count, move your pick alternately in down and up strokes, placing the down strokes on ‘1 &, 2 &, 3 &, 4 &’ and the up strokes on all the ‘e’ and ‘a’ subdivisions.
