The UN expert who first warned that Israel was orchestrating a campaign of deliberate mass starvation in Gaza more than 500 days ago has said governments and corporations cannot claim to be surprised at the horror unfolding. “Israel has built the most efficient starvation machine you can imagine. Hundreds of skulls are neatly and closely placed, cheekbone to cheekbone, in tall, mahogany-framed glass cabinets. Most carry faded, peeling labels, some bear painted catalogue numbers; one has gold teeth; and the occasional one still carries its skin tissue. This is the University of Edinburgh’s “skull room”. Many were voluntarily donated to the university; others came from executed Scottish murderers; some Indigenous people’s skulls were brought to Scotland by military officers on expeditions or conquest missions. Several hundred were collected by supporters of the racist science of phrenology – the discredited belief that skull shape denoted intelligence and character. The idea that if you really, really believe something you can make it happen seems to be the best explanation for Britain and France’s recent statements that they will recognise a Palestinian state. No matter how fervent Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are, their fervour will not make an impossible thing happen. There is no Palestinian state, and there certainly won’t be one by September. For mostly domestic political reasons, they have decided to set aside that fact. Recognition is an understandable gesture, but it will do nothing to solve the current famine, and is doomed in the short term because there is no real state to recognise. As a Cambodian living in Thailand, 31-year-old Da has kept her children home from school last week in fear they might face abuse. “One of my friends went to the market yesterday to buy durian and the seller told her that she hated Cambodians,” she said, of rising tensions between the neighbouring countries. When Mariama Kamara enters the Statiegeld return shop on Amsterdam’s Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, she is on a mission. She has been tasked by her aunt, who runs a nearby restaurant, with depositing three giant blue bags of bottles and cans. Two months after first going to hospital, a 65-year-old woman was dead – and her doctors are blaming the cosmetic creams she used on her face and body for decades. The anonymous patient, from Togo, is one of a string of cases reported in medical journals of cancers in black African women linked to skin-lightening creams and lotions, prompting dermatologists to call for better regulation. The melanin in darker skin typically offers some protection against the sun damage that can cause cancers. “Patients with black skin have a natural SPF of about 15, just by having pigmented skin,” said Prof Ncoza Dlova, head of dermatology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. “If they remove that melanin [with skin lightening creams], they’re actually removing the natural protection.” Estimates of skin…

PROTEST Support for Palestine Action will lead to arrest Police are planning to arrest anyone demonstrating in support of Palestine Action this weekend. The group has been banned under terrorism laws and a large event protesting against its proscription has been organised by the group Defend Our Juries. A source with knowledge of the police’s early planning for the event, due to take place in London on Saturday, said: “If they think that by turning up with significant numbers that we can’t arrest them for breaking terrorism laws, they need to think again. ” London’s Metropolitan police force is sceptical of claims that thousands could turn up, believing that a total in the low hundreds is more likely. Rakib Hossain was just 11 years old when standing innocently on the streets of Dhaka in July last year, he was killed by a bullet to the head – fired allegedly by the police. Hossain was one of more than 1,400 men, women and children killed in Bangladesh’s so-called July revolution, when hundreds of thousands rose up in protest against the country’s leader, Sheikh Hasina. Her attempts to crush the mass movement included deploying heavily armed police, who – with shoot to kill orders – fired live ammunition at civilians on the streets. Once a decade, Ukraine has a moment in which street protests redefine the country’s political direction. The Orange revolution of 2004; the Maidan revolution of 2014; and now, over the past few weeks, the first major wave of protest since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Cloudbreak, near the island of Tavarua in western Fiji, is one of the best waves in the world. For decades, the long, hollow left-hand reef break has drawn surfers from around the globe; later this year, the men’s and women’s World Surf League (WSL) champions will be crowned at Cloudbreak. Over the past six months, Donald Trump has been accused of rapidly dragging the largest democracy in the Americas towards authoritarianism. Now, the US president seems bent on undermining the region’s second largest democracy too. Since early July, Trump has launched an extraordinary attack on Brazil’s institutions, slapping 50% tariffs on imports from the South American country and sanctions on a supreme court judge – partly in retribution for what he called the political persecution of his ally, Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for his alleged leading role in a failed coup. “ I feel for the Brazilians,” said Steven Levitsky, the Harvard University political scientist who co-author of How Democracies Die. “ It’s painful to see the [US] government do damage to other countries’ democratic institutions as well.”…
