SPACE Nasa probe successful with closest approach to sun Nasa’s Parker solar probe successfully completed the closest approach to the sun by a human-made object, the space agency has said. The spacecraft passed just 6.1m km from the solar surface on 24 December, flying into the sun’s upper atmosphere – the corona – on a mission to help scientists learn more about Earth’s closest star. The spacecraft was expected to send detailed telemetry data about its status on 1 January. Moving at up to 692,000km/h, the Parker solar probe, launched in 2018, endured temperatures of up to 982C. Anna Possi answers the phone in the cafe but immediately asks to call her back. “I have a customer,” she said. It’s mid-afternoon and Possi, who owns Bar Centrale in Nebbiuno, a small town overlooking Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, has been serving coffee since 7am. She usually finishes at 7pm. It’s an average working day for a barista in Italy, but Possi is in one key respect far from the average barista: aged 100, she is the country’s oldest. The centenarian, who was recently given the honorary title of Commander of the Republic, is a familiar face to regulars who have lived their lives alongside the cafe as it has matured from cutting edge to vintage. “I’m always working – Sundays, Easter, Christmas. It’s the time of the year for endless cliches. From “tis the season” to “new year, new you”, there’s nowhere to hide from tired old phrases. One of my favourites is “Christmas comes around quicker each year” – which ignores the fact that one year equals one trip around the sun. There’s often a kernel of truth in a cliche, though. A recent study by Ruth Ogden from Liverpool John Moores University and colleagues showed that the vast majority of people in both the UK and Iraq really did experience Christmas (or Ramadan) approaching more rapidly every year. IT WAS A SEPTEMBER NIGHT IN 2020 when the fire torched the Red Mountain Travel Plaza. Residents of the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone nation watched as the only gas station and grocery store for miles around vanished amid towering orange flames and acrid smoke. Without the convenience store, the approximately 250 residents would have to drive more than an hour for provisions. The royal surgeon Charles-François Félix invented a curved silver scalpel to get at the fistula – you can see it in this glittering blockbuster – and practised on local paupers, killing several. Clara Brugada has taken some imaginative steps in her efforts to undo decades of economic and cultural inequality in one of the capital’s most impoverished neighbourhoods.
