Australia will go to the polls on 14 October to vote on whether to establish in the constitution the principle of an Indigenous voice – an elected body to advise the national parliament on Indigenous matters, but not to make legislation in its own right. Hollywood writers scored a major victory last month in their battle over artificial intelligence with a new contract featuring strong guardrails for how the technology can be used in future film and television projects. Writers and actors had been picketing for months as part of a historic “double strike” that brought the industry to a standstill. Translations of Homer matter to cultural history. John Keats once looked into the “wide expanse” of George Chapman’s 1611 translation of the Iliad and breathed “its pure serene”. Alexander Pope’s rhyming version of the Iliad (1715-1720) brought a canonical ancient author to a much larger audience than ever before. It had been through 27 editions by 1790. The early 20th-century Labour MP Will Crooks, who grew up in poverty and was dazzled by a twopenny secondhand copy, later recalled that “pictures of romance and beauty I had never dreamed of suddenly opened up before my eyes. The 600th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is fast approaching, with no end in sight. The conflict, a Zeitenwende as the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, called it, or epochal turn, has pushed the European Union into a fundamental reassessment of its role and policies on issues from agriculture, energy supply and, most obviously, security. One in six species is at risk of being lost in Britain, according to a comprehensive analysis by wildlife scientists. Bird species such as turtle doves had the most worrying results in the report, with 43% at risk of extinction, but other much loved creatures such as the hazel dormouse, the lady’s slipper orchid and the European eel also now face an uncertain future. While appearing on a podcast recently to publicise her first book, Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Evolution, Cat Bohannon found herself having to reassure the pregnant producer. Ukraine is set to receive billions of euros more in military aid, as well as training for fighter pilots, the EU’s top diplomat said, after a “historic” meeting of EU foreign ministers in Kyiv. Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, said on Monday the 27-nation bloc remained committed to helping Ukraine defeat a “brutal and inhumane” Russia. “I don’t see any member state faltering,” he said, reinforcing a declaration by the Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, last Friday that he was confident Slovakia and Poland would continue to support the fight. The NHS will be the Conservatives’ “achilles heel” at the next election, ministers have been warned in a report by a former government special adviser on health. BUSH HOUSE IN LONDON is a narrow, imposing building that was constructed about a century ago from rugged limestone, which helped it survive a nearby missile strike during the second world war.
