For glossy kitchen tiles on a budget, paint guru Annie Sloan suggests transforming inexpensive plain metro tiles with chalk paint, which can be painted straight on the tile without any prep work. ‘Turn each tile on its side and paint it half-and-half in two complementary shades to create gorgeously matt chequerboard tiles that look like you paid ten times the price,’ she says. Stick to a palette of four shades, with two shades per tile. Build the colour gradually, using thin coats and leaving plenty of drying time between each one. Once done, seal with clear lacquer.
