A couple of months ago, I came home to find my boyfriend sprawled on the couch in front of an unusual YouTube video. In it, a woman was cutting little cubes off a block of soap without saying anything. “What on earth are you doing?!” I said. “Just watch,” he said, goo-goo-eyed. Scars can be a beautiful thing, as a friend once reminded me after heart surgery. Initially she’d been distressed by her “ugly” scars but her boyfriend assured her he found them beautiful because they saved her life. However, even if scars are the result of lifesaving or life-giving (e.g., a Caesarean) surgery, it’s normal to feel self-conscious about them. Knowing what type of scar you have is key to treating it. A scar forms as part of the natural healing process. When you first enter Hannah Jensen’s studio, you are instantly struck with the spectacle of enormous canvas works of wild animals. A leopard with real fur stares with eyes that draw you in. Traditionally, having your period has been extremely resource intensive. In fact, the average woman uses an average of over 11,000 disposable menstrual products in her reproductive lifetime – which costs her thousands of dollars and produces enough plastic to fill a car. What’s more, the conversation around periods has always been furtive and often non-existent – there’s a social shame associated with menstruation, which makes it hard to talk about publicly. As recently as last year, period underwear brand AWWA had an ad banned on Facebook because it showed menstrual blood. AWWA was told that the ad’s content violates Facebook’s “shock and scare” policy, the same which stops ads depicting mutilation, torture and graphic medical procedures having a platform. Broths were traditionally made from animal carcasses and bones. An ancient Scottish tradition, called “passing the knuckle” involved villagers putting a beef knuckle bone in water on the wood burner overnight. The bone would stew overnight in the water and in the morning the villager would take it out and give it to their neighbour. This would go on night after night, and after a couple of weeks, nothing of the knuckle would be left – all the minerals needed to make bone, collagens and other complex proteins being left in the water that the villagers would consume by using it in cooked oats and soups. Peach Sorbet Homemade goodness – that’s where this recipe is at. It’s dairy-free and delicious. There’s no need to spend a gazillion dollars on sorbet at the supermarket. Make your own at home! Use very ripe bananas for this to give it enough sweetness, and enjoy! This recipe makes four ice creams easily or fills two generous bowls. You choose how you serve it! 1 can of peaches, drained2 ripe bananas, peeled1 tablespoon maple syrup½ teaspoon cinnamon Put the drained peaches and peeled bananas in a container and freeze for at least 3 hours, or leave overnight. Place the frozen fruit into a powerful blender and add the maple syrup and cinnamon. Blend just until well combined – in my powerful blender this takes only about 30 seconds. Be careful…
