Learning a New Culture
In the summer of 1956, San Diego, which sits just north of the Mexican border, held its first Fiesta del Pacifico (in English: Festival of the Pacific) celebration. My boyfriend, Ronnie, and I (teenage gringos transplanted from the Midwest) joined the whole community and dressed in costumes to reflect the Spanish heritage of the area.
Celebrations were everywhere: historic Old Town, site of the first European settlement in California; Mission de Alcala, founded in 1769 by Father Junípero Serra; the Presidio of San Diego, located on a hill with a park and museum. Many activities filled the summer—mariachi bands, barbecues, Spanish plays, food booths, shops, fairground activities and so forth.
Fiesta del Pacifico continued for only a few years, but most historical locations remain. I remember…
