1 lb frozen cylindrical rice cakes2 to 3 Tbsp gochujang (depending on how spicy you like it)3 Tbsp ketchup1 Tbsp sugar1½ tsp soy sauce½ tsp toasted sesame oil1 small red onion, cut into 1-in. wedges, then halved crosswise8 oz shishito peppers, stemmed1 Tbsp canola oilToasted sesame seeds, for sprinkling
1. Bring large pot of water to a boil. Add rice cakes and cook, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until just tender, 2 to 3 min. Drain and rinse under cold water.
2. Meanwhile, in small bowl, whisk together gochujang, ketchup, sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil and 2 Tbsp water until combined.
