Even in the upper echelons of our Top 100, some courses attract more praise and attention for one of their nines than the other. Royal Aberdeen, with its mesmerising outward half would be one example, as would Hillside near Southport, where a revamp of the back nine in the 1960s by Fred Hawtree took the inward half to a whole new level. That’s not to say the other holes were poor, just slightly overshadowed by the majesty and drama of the standout nine. I’ve always struggled with the concept of golf ‘boots’. Practical as they are in the winter, what cost do they come at, both from a fashion and performance standpoint, compared with a normal pair of golf shoes? Ecco’s latest offering has been billed as a ‘High Top’ rather than a boot, though, as you can see, it very much resembles the silhouette of a boot. From a looks perspective, it’s certainly a bold step away from the black, clunky boots I’ve tested before. I’d been to Spey Bay on the Moray Firth before, but not played due to 50mph winds and torrential rain. After struggling to open the car doors that time, I’d sought refuge in the clubhouse and let manager Bert Mackay tell me about the ambitious plans to transform the course into a reversible links with up to five routings. The Belfry – Brabazon GF: 18 holes: £205 The Brabazon course at The Belfry in the West Midlands is best known for hosting a record four Ryder Cups. This joint design project between Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas opened for play in 1977, since when it has benefited from regular and significant upgrading and redevelopment. Water hazards abound, with the excellent par-4 9th leading straight in to the iconic, drivable par-4 10th, one of the best examples of a risk-reward hole in England. We have all, at some stage, got on the wrong side of a tree or its roots or been affected by loose natural objects shed from the tree, such as leaves or branches. When such natural objects become unattached, either from a larger natural object or the ground, then they obtain the definition of a loose impediment, so long as they are indeed loose and not solidly embedded into the ground. Under the Rules, we are permitted to move loose impediments anywhere on or off the golf course, and there’s no specific method to remove them – you may use a hand, foot or club, or any other equipment you might be carrying. The Wilmslow Golf Club’s fine course lies just south of Manchester and enjoys a beautifully peaceful location. The club was founded in 1889 and originally played on land that is now home to the nine-hole course at Alderley Edge. Surprisingly, golf was only played there during the winter months as the grass was too long in the summer! And this may well be the reason that the club soon relocated to today’s idyllic and very attractive location. While that statement doesn’t necessarily apply to somewhere with the reputation of Trump Turnberry – unequivocally one of the best golf resorts in the world – this grand Ayrshire venue has recently undergone another set of renovations that have further enhanced the stature of the sublime Ailsa course. In September 2027, the 46th Ryder Cup matches will begin at JP McManus’ splendid Adare Manor in Ireland’s sporting heartland. It will also be 100 years since the first matches were played at Worcester Country Club, Massachusetts. And these centenary matches in ’27 are almost certainly the most important ever to be staged. At least for me they are. Walter Hagen was the playing captain of that USA team and the Great Britain side were trounced, winning just 2½ points of the 12 available before, probably shamefacedly, drowning their sorrows during the six days it took them to sail back across the Atlantic.
