1 Tension and slice One of the most common causes of a slice, which is often overlooked, is tension. Although it doesn't singularly cause the problem, it restricts the fluidity and athleticism of the golf swing. The most common problem is starting the downswing with your shoulders, creating an action termed as ‘swinging over the top'. This causes the club to slice across the ball at impact. When you watch top sportsmen, you see them make it look so easy, gliding effortlessly through their actions. With The Open Championship to be staged at Muirfield the following week, many of the European Tour's best players, and a number of stars from the USA, travelled to Gleneagles to complete their final preparations for the year's third Major.
