Some good news: Proper aim and alignment are things any golfer can master, and, once you do, shaping shots in either direction becomes a no-brainer—and a lot of fun. First, some background. We've long been told that the direction you swing the club is the direction the ball will fly. Modern technology, however, says that it's the angle of the clubface at impact that really determines initial ball direction, and the way the ball eventually curves results from how the path and clubface angle relate to each other at impact. One of the reasons the best players in the world have such amazing short games is that they all know how to proficiently hit at least two different shots with the same wedge. The secret to doing this isn't as complicated as you might think. It's all in how well you can control your clubhead radius when you swing. Let's first look at the standard chip-and-run, which is a shot where the ball launches low and rolls out toward the target. To hit this shot correctly, you need to keep your arms extended as you swing back and through, creating a wide clubhead radius and the needed shallow angle of attack into the ball. I PLAYED IN SIX LPGA TOUR majors as a club pro, but there were areas of my game that I knew I needed to improve. That prompted me to ask my friend Top too Teacher Dana Dahlquist to take a look at my swing so I could better understand why I couldn't hit the ball as far as my peers— and why I kept missing shots to the left. Every round is rife with challenges, big and small. Case in point for the latter is dealing with a sidehill lie, which you can find even when you drive for the fairway. It's a potentially funky situation, but not if you know how to adjust your setup so it feels like a regular shot from the short grass. A common sidehill lie is one where the ball sits way above your feet (pictured). Step one is to aim the clubface at your intended target—that always comes first. Don't grip the club just yet. The key to both shots is one move, and, to learn it, you need to know what it feels like to make a swing while holding the clubface open through impact. To assist, grab a Ping-Pong paddle. IN MEMORIAM The sad passing of Top 100 Teacher Emeritus Dana Rader from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder, on August 17 meant the loss of not only one of the game's greatest instructors, but also one of its greatest people. Caring, polite and smart, Dana was a force in the instruction space, operating her own academy at Ballantyne CC in Charlotte, N.C., and then at Belfair in Beaufort, S.C., while appearing in numerous TV, print and digital outlets, including countless lessons and smart insight for GOLF magazine and GOLF.com.
