The place reminds me a lot of Kukuiolono Golf Course on Kaua’i, which I’ve had the pleasure of playing for many years. It, too, is a nine-hole layout and open to the public. However, the course never lacks for golfers, local or otherwise, and they don’t take reservations. Green fees are $10. Rarely does a group smaller than a foursome go out, and the wait can be an hour or more. They do have golf carts, rental clubs and spectacular ocean views. I find it a little perplexing that Kukuiolono does so well while Kahuku is struggling.…

When facing a lie where the ball is below your feet, the tendency is to aim left, because conventional wisdom says that a ball below your feet will cut. But how much left? It’s a guessing game at best. Plus, by aiming left of the target, you naturally invite an over-the-top downswing and a score-wrecking pull. Here’s the savvy play: Take dead aim at the target, then pull your right foot back a good six inches. It’s a draw-shot adjustment that offsets the ball’s tendency to curve to the right. Your job? MAKE A PINCH Press your left thumb against the handle. It’s not a grip-pressure thing: This pinch is what helps support the club when you reach the top of your backswing. GET A LIFE Lay the shaft gently below the life line (the big curvy one). This positions the handle under your heel pad, which will boost power and control. SIZE MATTERS Wrap your bottom three fingers securely around the handle. Ideally, the tips of these fingers should just touch your heel pad. If not, you’re using the wrong-sized grips. 1 KEEP IT STEEP AND OPEN To hit a perfect bunker shot, you must use the bounce on your wedge. This is in direct contrast to what most recreational players do, which is to chop and dig the leading edge into the sand. A steep attack angle is mandatory (just look at how vertical the shaft is here at the top), but you must keep the face wide open the whole way so that the sole strikes the sand first. 2 BOUNCE AND THUMP The bounce (or lowest part of the sole) is designed to slide, not dig. PUTT YOUR SLICE AWAY If you’re slicing a lot of your full shots, it’s a good bet that you’re losing control of the clubface at some point during the swing. To check this, make some practice swings with your putter. That’s right—your putter! The putter’s flat face makes it easier to tell whether it’s open or not, which will give you a better awareness of what the face is doing during the swing. Slowly swing the putter back and through, pausing for a moment when the shaft is parallel to the ground on the backswing and downswing. This month we once again tapped our friends True Spec (truespecgolf.com) to fit a non-Tour player to illustrate the value of custom club fitting, in this case former collegiate football player and mid-handicapper Graham Fisher. True Spec fitter Tyler Todd managed the session at the company’s midtown Manhattan location, and quickly realized that the off-the-rack driver Fisher had brought in produced spin rates that were far higher than optimal, costing him significant distance and accuracy. After experimenting with different models, Todd switched Fisher from TaylorMade’s older SLDR to the new M4, which in itself offered far more forgiveness and better spin rates. 1 BUTTON UP Hold the shaft in neutral (zero forward lean) and stand so that your shirt buttons are vertical to the ground and hovering over your front foot. The clubhead wants to bottom out wherever those buttons are at impact, which is why you set them ahead of the ball at address. Lastly, point your entire body slightly left of the target. 2 GET STRAIGHT Take the club straight back. Avoid yanking it inside—that’s a contact killer. (You’re actually better off swinging the clubhead slightly outside the target line.) You can hinge your wrists, but it’s not critical. Even though it’s a short shot, take a hefty backswing, otherwise you’ll risk decelerating. 3 BAG THE LAG On your downswing, feel like the clubhead is leading the grip. If you…

TOE TAPPER Toed shots are actually the least problematic miss with your wedge. The biggest issue is distance control (the ball won’t travel as far). Unintentional shots hit out here are normally caused by standing up through impact or letting your weight fall into your heels. Stop it! DOWN & DIRTY This is the most common impact flaw. Low shots happen because you stop rotating through impact. When your brain realizes that you’re about to stick the club into the ground, you stand up and race your hands to the ball. Cue screaming skull. HEAVY HEEL Heel shots are caused by a swing path that comes in too deeply from the inside-out. A ball played too far back is also a culprit. (If you do both, you’re toast.) There are a ton of techniques that teachers use to help players hit the ball higher. What I like about the one I’m about to share with you is that it requires zero adjustments to your setup, or the need to add wacky gyrations to your swing. You essentially get to make your normal, everyday motion, but with one very important downswing thought: “Paint the Wall.” Here’s what I mean. As you transition from the top of your backswing, extend your left arm and let out some wrist hinge so that by the time your hands reach waist height, the clubshaft sits parallel to the ground. SHAKE HANDS FOR A BETTER SHIFT One thing that all good ballstrikers do is transfer their weight onto their front foot early in the downswing. This allows the hips and shoulders to rotate to the left as the right side fires through impact, squaring the clubface and creating additional clubhead speed and power. If your irons consistently come up short, it could be that you’re not getting to your front side soon enough on the downswing. Here’s a simple drill to fix that. Hold a club in your left hand and extend it toward the target, parallel to the ground.
