The kudu is one of Africa’s most elegant animals. As a spiral-horned antelope, its closest relatives are the eland, the bushbuck and the rare sitatunga – a diverse set of animals that inhabit everywhere from mountains to waterways. Kudus feed mostly on leaves and they are remarkably adaptable: They occur in habitats ranging from very dry, semi-desert areas to wet, broad-leaved woodlands, provided there is sufficient food available. I grew up in nearby Uitenhage and my holiday memories of J-Bay consist of VW kombis with surfboards on the roof, soft-serve ice cream and Putt-Putt.
