When you arrive at The Crags, situated 20km from Plettenberg Bay, Peak Formosa, the highest point of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, majestically comes into view. The area is home to polo fields, farms, wildlife sanctuaries and Kurland Village, aka Kurland rural township. (From here, the N2 winds down towards the coast, past a 600-year-old indigenous forest, to Nature’s Valley.)
What is extraordinary about driving through Kurland Village are the small food gardens dotted everywhere – the residents have been busy! We – my partner, Pieter, and I – lived on a dairy farm in The Crags after meeting 20 years ago, and most of his staff stayed in Kurland Village. We visited there often, celebrating weddings and, sadly, funerals too.
