Visit the Sandveld Museum
The Sandveld Museum at 24 Church Street is not one of those massive jam packed museums that immediately makes you want to head for the hills. About 15 exhibits feature photos, newspaper clippings, books and Bibles, archaeological artifacts, agricultural implements, furniture, clothing, crafts, a traditional Nama matjieshuis, and various old-world souvenirs. These give visitors a good overview of the natural and cultural history of the region, the development of the town and its once-thriving fishing industry, as well as the story of the British gunboat HMS Sybille, which ran aground on the rocks at Steenbokfontein, 8km south of the town, during the Anglo-Boer War.
