Buddhist monks drank snake venom to confer immunity to snake bite and variolation (smearing of a skin tear with cowpox to confer immunity to smallpox) was practiced in 17th century China. Judith Leyster Judith Leyster was a recognized painter during her life, but largely forgotten after her death. Her work was only brought to public attention once again in 1893, when a particularly fine Frans Hals painting acquired by the Louvre turned out to be a painting by Judith Leyster.
