In the late ’60s/’70s, the Rhodes appealed to pianists seeking a piano-like feel in a portable instrument. Unlike an acoustic, a Rhodes through an amp could compete with electric instruments on stage.
Billy Preston used one on The Beatles’ Get Back while it became a staple for Jazz/Funk/ Fusion bands, including Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters (Miles Davis introduced the Rhodes to Herbie), Joe Sample (The Crusaders), Larry Dunn (Earth Wind and Fire), Joe Zawinul (Weather Report) and George Duke (Frank Zappa). Players often used ring mod, phaser, tape delay, chorus, wah and fuzz, and in the late ’70s/’80s the Rhodes pimping company Dyno-My-Piano helped popularise the harder, more metallic, ‘tri-stereo-chorus’ sound.…
