Some people became explorers by accident! In June 1325, when Ibn Battuta left home and headed for the holy city of Mecca, he fully intended to return. But Battuta, who was 21 at the time, continued to travel and, in the end, did not go back home for another 24 years!
Battuta’s initial 18-month journey was not an unusual one. He was embarking on a holy pilgrimage called Hajj, which every adult Muslim must make at least once in their lifetime. He set out from his home in Tangier, a city in northern Morocco, and travelled through Egypt, Syria and Palestine, visiting cities such as Tunis, Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem.
