When North Korea chose to launch a PR assault on English football, they knew where to start: Blyth Spartans.
The sixth-tier club’s Croft Park home is an unlikely location for Kim Jong-un’s tourist drive, yet one travel company duly paid £250 for a pitchside advertising hoarding with the rare slogan ‘Visit North Korea’.
“They got in touch, wanting to advertise, but wouldn’t say who it was,” Mark Scott, commercial director, tells FFT. “I pushed and eventually they said, ‘It may be a bit difficult because it’s Visit North Korea’.”
The advert caught the attention of fans, who created a mock highlights package, including footage of North Korean state TV, to celebrate Blyth beating “imperialists” Spennymoor Town.
