George Plimpton became one of the greatest and most fearless sportswriters in America. Like his close friend Hunter S Thompson, George was a founding father of ‘gonzo journalism’ – where the writer is the protagonist, throwing himself right into the heart of the story.
Through the 1960s and ’70s, Plimpton immersed himself gonzo-style in many professional sports, training and playing with a host of leading teams. The writer tried his hand at baseball, boxing, motor racing, golf, tennis, basketball, ice hockey and, most famously, American football, when he played as a quarterback for the Detroit Lions. The experience inspired his classic book Paper Lion.
