Sarah’s inspiration “My inspiration was to create a wreath without using greenery. While evergreens signal the holidays and last a long time, I wanted to do something that was different and unique. This design is a more whimsical take on a wreath. I think the color scheme and berries speak to the season, but the asymmetry and texture almost make it more of an art piece. It will dry nicely and can be used year after year with proper care. LUSHLY PATTERNED RUGS are part of Shadi Shafiei’s earliest childhood memories. Growing up in Iran, she and her sister played on their parents’ Persian carpet, crawling over what they imagined to be brown mountain ranges and swimming through blue and green rivers. Now as an art historian working at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), she is still fascinated by these intricately knotted works. A PROMISE IS A PROMISE. Doug Collum’s mother, Barbara, had some candles that she loved so much she was loath to burn them, but she finally did. Collum promised her that he would find them again. “It turned out to be impossible to find beeswax candles cast from a real tree branch,” says Collum. “I never saw the original candles, but nothing matched what I imagined my mother’s expectation would be.” So what’s a son to do? HAND EMBROIDERY WAS SIMPLY part of Mariana Barran Goodall’s upbringing in Monterrey, Mexico, where it was taught by the nuns in her school. When she arrived in Houston, Texas, in 2014, she was surprised at the lack of hand-stitched textiles, so she picked up her needle and thread again and started making special pieces as gifts. Goodall eventually opened a studio, Hibiscus Linens, named for the pitcher of hibiscus tea in her family’s refrigerator that indicated guests were expected. Many of her products are designed especially for guests: napkins and delicate hand towels either elegantly monogrammed or adorned with delicate floral motifs and crochet borders. DANIELLE ROLLINS As a child, my parents gave me Steinbach nutcrackers every year for Christmas, and now my children give me one each year to add to my collection. When they were much younger, my mother would help them select one and wrap it, teaching them the joys of collecting, anticipation, family traditions, and most importantly, the joy of giving rather than receiving. LIZ LEGG KNEW SHE WANTED TO BE a jewelry designer at age 19, when she began buying broken pieces at Scott Antique Markets in Atlanta and updating them. After studying at the Gemological Institute of America and working with designer Stephen Dweck, Legg returned to her native Birmingham, Alabama, to create her own jewelry, which has since become a staple in the closets of discriminating women all over the South. For my aunt, Camille Sloan, and her husband, Crofton, it was around a bonfire in a soybean field down the hill from their wooded home in Tupelo, Mississippi.
