 What flower best represents your personality, and why? A garden rose. It’s one of my all-time favorite flowers. I love using it in designs because it can pair well with almost anything. It’s romantic but also goes well with unexpected elements, such as protea, grasses, or berries. I like to think my personality is the same—amenable to many different styles. Name one of your favorite floral trends. The move toward nondescript palettes—the days of “these are my wedding colors” are over. This approach allows for a much more natural floral composition. Bee’s original was worn out, but I loved the two bull’s-eye panes at the top. I had a new door made to accommodate the bull’s-eye glass, then stained and polyurethaned the wood for permanent luster. It looks handsome and substantial. ON SMALL SPACES Small rooms seem bigger the more you put in them (to a point); it’s all about the arrangement. WHEN TAMMY CONNOR MOVED BACK TO CHARLESTON, South Carolina, a year ago, her Birmingham friends toasted her with a going-away party. Gifts included mementos with iconic Birmingham scenes, sweet notes of remembrances, and a house key from one of her closest friends with a note that read, “You’ll always have a home here.” While Connor hasn’t fully left her hometown (she still maintains an office in Birmingham), she did set up a new office in Charleston, the place where she first established herself as a designer and honed the bespoke style she is known for today. Spring is the inspiration for this arrangement, which features flowers that are true to the season and not necessarily available year-round. The star, and one of my favorites, is a giant ranunculus called a ‘Clooney’. It’s dramatic—and rare. It’s only around for a few, too-short weeks every year. Two other floral features in this one are the fragrant hyacinth and beautiful andromeda, which is an incredible bloom that does double duty because it’s both floral and foliage. There are essentially only three colors in this arrangement (pink, yellow, and white), and they come together beautifully. Flower: Congratulations on your new book, Evocative Interiors (Rizzoli New York, 2018). I love the idea of emotion-driven design. Can you expand on that? Ray Booth: I believe that emotions are the seeds from which beauty grows. Before discussing aesthetics with my clients, I strive to harvest their emotions by asking personal, thought-provoking questions. What gives them joy? What brings them peace? AN INTERIOR DESIGNER for about 20 years, Alecia Stevens’s aesthetic can best be described as eclectic with touches of traditional and modern influences. Stevens has a background in fashion and theater design, experience she’s honed to create stylish rooms for her clients. A Look Back… to our June 2015 issue and an arrangement by New Orleans florist Kim Starr Wise, shot at the historic Longue Vue gardens. With their saturated lipstick hues, these frilly blooms are femininity in floral form. Like ladies at a party crowded into the powder room, they remind me of a sisterhood in raucous conversation—glamorous garden roses, seductive anemones, blushing ranunculus, and wild clematis—all laughing shoulder-to-shoulder, straining toward the mirror to check that their makeup is just right.
