THE PHRASE “RENAISSANCE MAN” is one tossed around like beads and doubloons off a Mardi Gras float, so it’s lost some of its punch as of late, but in reference to Charles Nevinson—the owner and visionary behind Atlanta’s Architectural Accents—the moniker fits like a glove. Architectural Accents is a veritable Ali Baba’s cave of antique design treasures gathered from Nevinson’s travels around the globe. He knows where to find them and also where to place them in a setting so they feel original to the space. Instead of boarding a plane to some exotic honeymoon destination after saying “I do,” Ashley Fox enjoyed a happy-hour cocktail with her husband, Mike Mensing, in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and the groom had tied the knot earlier that day to the tune of clinking mimosa glasses on the patio of a renovated Georgian mansion. “That’s the real benefit of having a brunch wedding,” says Fox, who is a floral designer by trade. OTHER THAN MICHELANGELO, perhaps no other sculptor permeates the zeitgeist like the beloved French artist Auguste Rodin (1840–1917). His style, evoked in seminal works such as The Thinker, The Kiss, and Burghers of Calais, was revolutionary for its departure from the idealized forms made famous by the Greeks, pivoting toward a radical modernism that evoked the intensity and character within the human body. Tara Guérard: I think it’s still similar—still elegant, simple, and tasteful. I would say I am better at creating ambience and maybe a little more organic, but it’s still very tailored, like always. Mimi Brown: It just sort of happened organically. I’ve always loved entertaining. I think it was brought on by watching my grandmother. She entertained a lot and had a beautiful rose garden. Growing up in the South and watching the women at church entertain often was a big part of my life—and a big part of entertaining was always the flowers. Flower: How would you describe your style 10 years ago, and how has it changed? Lauryl Lane: Ten years ago my floral design style was very lush but also very regimented. Today I am more in tune with my artistic medium, and I believe in really following the lines of the flowers to create the shape of my arrangements. I’m still heavy-handed with the floral but have more movement and texture. I want them to look luxurious without being stuffy or overdone. YEARS AGO, WHEN I purchased Notes from Madoo: Making a Garden in the Hamptons, Robert Dash’s collection of essays on gardening, it was as if we were having a conversation, except that Bob (as he was called) was doing all the talking. Affable yet often quite recalcitrant, Bob was one of the most notable raconteurs on the Eastern Fork of Long Island.
