ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO, we held one of our flower launch parties in Atlanta at the botanical gardens. It was an exciting evening with people from all corners of the floral-and-garden-design world in attendance. There was, however, one garden aficionado who stood out—a man in a straw gardening hat, wearing a beautiful flower-patterned shawl, an oilcloth apron, horn-rimmed sunglasses, and a giant squash blossom turquoise necklace. We were introduced, and he never left my side the whole evening. It turned out that he wanted to write for this publication—new as it was—and I, of course, said, “YES.” I had heard of Ryan Gainey forever and knew his work to be brilliant, poetic, and possessing that elusive combination of classicism and whimsy. By the numbers Elway Hall has 17 working fireplaces and 10 bedrooms. Each mantel gets swagged; each bedroom to be occupied gets a tree. On average Dixon trims a dozen trees for the house, but he has decorated as many as 26. The smallest one is three feet; the largest one towers at 13. “If I’m doing 20 trees it takes me a week,” he says. “But inevitably every Christmas I spend at least three days on ladders stringing lights and hanging things.” For the record, the designer estimates he has over 20,000 ornaments. IT’S THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING AND THE FAMILIAR, heartwarming sights return and continue until Christmas Eve. Evergreen trees of varying sizes are strapped to station wagons and compact cars, SUVs and minivans. We pull out ornaments, tree lights, candles, and special china. We polish our silver and hang wreaths with beautiful bows on our front doors. The party circuit begins. But it wouldn’t quite be the holidays without the flowers of Christmas—the poinsettia, amaryllis, and paperwhite arrangements that round out the seasonal color palette. ALL TYPES OF SILVER, from flatware to serving pieces, naturally speak to the Christmas season with all their shine and richness. Beloved collections, often handed down and pulled into service, fill our tables and our rooms. And perhaps the star of the holiday show is silver in the dramatic repoussé style with its surface almost completely covered with intricate flowers and other detailing. Repoussé from the French, meaning “pushed back,” refers to any type of ornamentation in which the design is raised in relief on the reverse or interior side of the metal material at hand. While the technique has been extensively practiced throughout history, the word’s first known use was in the early 1800s when the method was thoroughly embraced by silversmiths in America. Keep the water consistent and do not submerge the bulb, otherwise it will rot. 6 BLOSSOMS WILL appear in about four weeks. Mariano Fortuny is having a moment; wait—make that several. The venerable creator of an eponymous line of beautiful and forward-thinking fabrics since 1906, which are still in production today, is being embraced by fashion, entertainment, and literary circles in fresh ways this year. And, while never out of favor, the Fortuny aesthetic feels so au courant all over again. At the most recent Met Gala, a celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Manus × Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, womenswear designer Ashley Olsen donned a lustrous, gold vintage Fortuny coat to walk the red carpet.
