My inspiration for this design comes from the utmost authority on palette and texture, Mother Nature. During autumn, boldly colored blooms coordinate with the season’s abundant fruits and vegetables. We are immersed in a chorus of garnet, copper, amber, rust, crimson, chestnut, bittersweet, clove, olive, and maize. For a fall wreath, I selected florets and foliage that dry well to form a long-lasting base that can be infused with fresh flowers again and again. I included a new favorite, the strawflower, because it maintains its shape and vivid color for a long time, making it an ideal element for low-maintenance wreaths. FLORAL SHEARS Trims soft stems, excess greenery and spent blooms. I like Sakagen. BYPASS PRUNERS Cuts tough-stemmed flowers and woody growth. UTILITY LIGHTER Some flowers (like poppies and poinsettias) release a milky sap that clogs other stems. Sear their tips over an open flame for about 30 seconds to seal in the sap each time you cut them. FROGS Keep stems in vessels too wide or shallow firmly in place. Can be vintage or new in materials such as metal, ceramic or glass. Spiky types hold up thin, slender stems; frogs with holes anchor thicker stems. WIRE Can bundle stems so they’re easier to arrange. This event took place in early September so my guests would have one last opportunity to put on their colorful, springy Lela dresses before the cold set in. It was also right after I had shown my spring collection in New York, so I was in the mood for an afternoon of leisure—and cocktails. I love to entertain at a friend’s house because it gives me the chance to root around in their cabinets and closets for things to put together a table with. It is such fun to see what friends have bought and collected over the years, and put those things to use in a way that feels fresh and new—usually for both of us. CUT THE FLOWERS when they are half to two-thirds of the way open, and then remove any foliage that will fall below the waterline in a vase. INSPECT THE PETALS for damage or hidden bugs and remove them. PAIR MUMS with other late-season garden materials such as fall leaves, crabapples on the branch, ornamental cabbage, dried grains, and dahlias. EXPECT MUMS TO LAST a long time in the vase, often more than two weeks. Add floral preservative to the water to help the cut blooms retain their vibrant coloring and also extend the vase life even longer.…

Michael Lin won’t mind a bit if you step all over his work. In fact, he strongly encourages it. Known for what he calls architectural interventions, this Taiwanese artist “creates paintings as spaces to occupy,” he says, rather than thinking of them merely as objects. In Atlanta, that space happens to be at the High Museum of Art, where the Richard Meier–designed atrium (and its luminous skylight) lures visitors to meander across Lin’s Utah Sky 2065-40 (blue curve), named for the Benjamin Moore paint color that serves as a vibrant backdrop for stop-you-in-your-tracks florals inspired by an Asian textile.
