It seems that in our current culture, weddings are taking on a life of their own, becoming greater than the sum of their parts, as byzantine as the nuptials of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We wonder how, with myriad moving parts that often include very different families with very different customs and sensibilities, the day arrives, the couple marries, and all ends well. But it almost always does. Today joining together in matrimony is big business and big buzz, with styles that run the gamut from over-the-top, every-inch-covered-in-glitter, reality-show drama (bridezilla included), to a fairy-tale royal wedding. My inspiration for this wintry bouquet was the 19th-century poem “The Eve of St. Agnes” by John Keats. Set in a medieval Scottish castle, the poem takes place on one of the coldest nights of the year, when legend has it that unmarried girls dream of their future husbands. For my design, I chose flowers and materials that reflect the imagery from the poem. Three shades of white roses add a soft, bridal look to the base of white and green hydrangeas. White phalaenopsis orchids and gardenias add a touch of elegance, and textured greens feel like they could have been gathered from the moors. I added traditional lace and a Scottish thistle kilt pin as finishing touches on this romantic bouquet, perfect for a winter bride. MATERIALS: ■ white phalaenopsis…

flower: Patrick, you hold advanced degrees in history, own a fabulous shop dedicated to culinary antiques, and also decorate houses. That’s quite a range, but it’s clear that the common thread is your deep connection to the past. Where did that originate? PATRICK DUNNE: First and foremost I consider myself an antiquarian and historian, and I just happen to do decorating. I went to Georgetown for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in intellectual history, and living in D.C. was a very formative experience for me because I spent just as much time walking the streets and studying the Georgian architecture as I did studying in the library. Favorite flower… Roses fresh from my garden at Serenity. If I have to buy them, though, I buy the older ones so they look as though they’ve just been picked. Obscure culinary antique I’m dying to get my hands on… A knife cleaner. It doesn’t sound very glamorous, but it’s a big wheel with a crank used to polish and sharpen steel knives in the 19th century. Most treasured family heirloom… A silver spoon from the 1890s that my grandmother used to feed me with as a baby. It is heavily embossed with daisies, and when I am feeling melancholy, I use it to eat my morning oatmeal and it’s an instant pick-me-up.
