As grand as the estate is, its owners were insistent that it be a functioning home for a busy family, not too precious. Rachel Ortiz and Robin Sturm worked closely with the wife to ensure that was the case. The two offered up rooms delineated by function. “Houses like this can be like museums,” says Sturm, “but while this one is very glamorous, it’s also lived-in. CONNECTICUT-BASED INTERIOR DESIGNER Billy Ceglia and his partner have escaped to Miami Beach for much-needed weekends of sunshine and relaxation for more than a decade. So when the time came to renovate the 1,485-square-foot “typically ’90s condo” they’d purchased some years back, the idea of spending extra time in these shores somewhat assuaged the start-from-scratch intensity of the project ahead. “We did a full-gut remodel that literally took it down to essentially a ginormous concrete room,” says Ceglia. “The previous condo had no redeeming features, but we chose it because the location couldn’t be beat.” Just off Fifth Street in Miami Beach’s South of Fifth area, their building is nestled among shops, restaurants and cafes, and barely a block from the beach. The announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year is a chance for design brands to launch new products in their collections or bring previous hits back into the spotlight. That’s very much the case with Devon&Devon. A 2022 release, the Admiral bathtub gets a bolt of energy with the hue of the hour, Very Peri, a periwinkle blue meant to encourage imagination. But it’s the exuberant backdrop to this bath classic that has us enchanted. Although based miles away in New York, it’s clear that Florida twines its way through Mazy Path’s latest collection of wallcoverings like a pretty vine. Titled Treasure Tree, the line blooms with motifs inspired by plants native to our state. The Mangrove pattern, based on the red mangrove tree, highlights the species’ beauty, as well as its resilient nature, which helps protect the coastline from storm surges and provides habitat for various animals. The Guava design is a celebration of the fruit’s pink coloration, and its connection to wildlife. “I designed all this in New York during the winter months of the pandemic,” says Alexis Audette, Mazy Path’s founder and creative director. “My research led me to Florida’s red mangrove and pink guava trees, and I truly became an armchair traveler.…

WHEN ENTREPRENEUR and engineer Jonathan Hallett encountered a tan-colored 1,500-square-foot stilt house right on the ocean in Islamorada in the early 2000s, he knew he had found something special—though, admittedly, he used to refer to it as a “no-frills beach shack.” Frill-free or not, Hallett and his family soon found themselves making the trek from Atlanta more and more—some 740 miles on the road just so they could sink their feet in the sand. Then nature intervened in the form of Hurricane Irma, whose Category 4 winds crushed Hallett’s getaway when it swept through the Keys in 2017. “There’s always a risk in doing something nice,” he says, but decided, “Let’s make it into something special.” To start anew, Hallett first enlisted Curry Dixon Construction to head up the renovation. “The…

Utilizing plants species that are indigenous to our local region, so-called native plantings, is a big trend in South Florida right now. It’s an important concept because native plantings do tend to consume less water, require less maintenance, and restore and preserve biodiversity. So, it’s a good trend. Q. What about trends in terms of hardscape or specific items used in the design? While there’s no lack of new construction in St. Petersburg, sometimes the prospect of bringing the aesthetic charms of a historic property back to life is too enticing to pass up. Interior designer Pamela Harvey has seen this scenario play out many times before throughout her 20 years in the business, and it was this love for the past that brought a young widow into her office nearly two years ago.
