This issue of Florida Design features editor’s picks from our trip to the High Point market in June of this year. The editorial team had a grand time touring vendor showrooms, meeting designers, and beaming video interviews directly to our universe of social media followers. (I was mostly in charge of getting the van full of creative types safely from the hotel to various venues.) Designer Mikel Welch is practically the poster child for the trend-making Primitive Modern aesthetic, pairing patinated vintage-inspired pieces with clean-lined modern items. “I love to say that the collection is a combination of Fred Flintstone plus current day design trends,” Welch says. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Naples-based Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild, which evolved from a furniture restoration and finishing shop into a full-service woodworking company. Its namesake founder, Thomas Riley, set the bar high with his core principle of providing “monumental quality and white-glove service” and created a regional legacy with his firm’s artisanal millwork, accents, and cabinetry. Back then, Riley was winning awards for crafting Old World cabinets, multilayered crown molding, decorative wainscoting, and dark finishes for the wellspring of Mediterranean mansions overtaking South Florida communities. CAN CREATING A THREE-STORY, nearly 14,000-square-foot home—with complicated plans that call for a spa with a massage room, a theater, a rotating sportscar platform, and a separate guesthouse—end up being “unmitigated fun”? Ed Cannatelli of Cannatelli Builders says it can. His recent partnership with interior designer Michael Gray sparked a kind of “exuberant inspiration” for this spectacular Fort Lauderdale home set on a turn of the New River. “When the creators of a home are in sync, the whole project reflects that synergy,” Cannatelli says. “This was meant to be a drop-dead amazing house,” says Gray. “The owner’s vision was for it to be over-the-top—a celebrity house. A few months ago, I had the privilege of touring the Fort Lauderdale house that graces the cover of this issue. Aside from its architectural expression and expanses of glass, which are admittedly impressive, what struck me about this home was how all-encompassing it is. “Fun House” (page 178) is so much more than a place to gather, relax, or entertain. It offers, as our writer puts it, “a buffet of pleasures” including a spa-like wellness center with a full gym, infrared sauna, and even a tanning booth; an art studio; a glass office overlooking a garage with a rotating pad for a prized sportscar; a home theater; and even a closet dedicated to a sneaker collection. At the intersection of architecture, nature, and art, lies the world of vertical gardens—installations of plants that seem to grow from the walls. Talita Gutierrez, founder of São Paulo- and Miami-based Verde Vertical, has been transforming residential and commercial spaces with these organic mosaics since 2010. Gutierrez’s designs employ a different palette of plants designed for each project—from free-growing organic to manicured contemporary. WITH ITS COBBLESTONE STREETS, brick sidewalks, and cachet as one of “America’s Most Romantic Small Towns,” Rosemary Beach lured a Nashville family to purchase a vacation home and engage longtime design partner Jonathan Savage to reimagine the property. The client’s trust in Palm Beach- and Nashville-based Savage ran so deep that they barely raised an eyebrow when he declared the entry foyer would become the dining room—a first in his long career. Savage felt strongly that the oddly shaped room could become a fabulous combination dining area and reading room. Deep in the pine forests of Montana, about a half-hour’s drive from Missoula, a new resort is changing the game for sophisticated travelers with a passion for the great outdoors. The Green O—a riff on Greenough, the town closest to the property—is a gated enclave of 12 exclusive, adults-only wilderness retreats within a 37,000-acre cattle and bison ranch that also houses The Resort at Paws Up. SET ONE FOOT INSIDE the expansive foyer, and you know what this home in Jupiter is all about: laid-back luxury and breathtaking views of the Loxahatchee River’s sparkling waters.
