The most capable of all the Yak variants of WW II, the Yak-3 was essentially a smaller, stripped down, lightweight re-design of the Yak-1, still with wood used in parts of its structure. Lighter and smaller than the Yak-9 but powered by the same engine, it was robust, easy to maintain and a highly successful dog-fighter.
With a wing of similar design but smaller both in span and surface area than the Yak-9, with the oil cooler moved from under the nose to the wing roots and with a retractable tailwheel, the Yak-3 was a low drag design.
