‘Sugar and stress definitely go together,’ says nutrition guru Patrick Holford.
‘When you lose blood-sugar control, you get mood highs and lows. Low blood sugar stimulates adrenalin, which makes you irritable, edgy, pessimistic, moody and hungry. So you want sugar, and a fizzy drink, bread, pies or whatever feels very desirable. Then your blood sugar shoots up and you make more insulin, so it goes too low again – so you become even more irritable and tired.’
THE FIX Eat little and often to keep your blood sugar steady, and go for combos of protein with complex carbs, rather than sweet treats – for example, snack on an oat cake with almond butter, raw carrot sticks with houmous, or an apple and a handful of walnuts.…
