SUPPOSEDLY a game changing approach for NSW fisheries and commercial and rec fishers, launched with high hopes and fanfare some time back, where is the program up to? As of January, the Lobster Fishery strategy was completed, as was the Trawl Whiting strategy. The Spanner Crabs strategy was at draft stage. The Line and Trap Fishery proposals were with a working group. Not much to excite rec fishers just yet. The mulloway proposals are also with a working group. On the plus side, that group has Bob Kearney and Dave Rae as members, who know lots about mulloway and rec fishing priorities for them. The best places to fish on any given estuary aren’t always the most obvious. I used to think that if you followed the crowd, you’d find the fish. But I gradually learned that, in many cases, anglers and boats simply gather in one spot simply because other anglers and boats are there. They aren’t necessarily catching fish, either. They’re there because it’s often the closest spot to the ramp or the deepest part of the inlet. Either way, it’s a classic case of anglers acting a bit like sheep. And sheep don’t tend to catch many fish. Hundreds of boats concentrated in one area on a large estuary is particularly hard to fathom when there’s nearly always acres of fishy water nearby without a boat or angler in sight. I…

THE past decade has seen the word “sustainable” used in many situations to the point where it has become very fashionable and, in some cases, misunderstood. Sustainable is described as 1 – Able to be maintained at a certain rate or level. 2 – Able to be upheld or defended. Now I’ll bet many of you thought that it meant environmentally friendly or climate change safe. Just because something can be maintained at a certain level doesn’t mean it’s not doing environmental damage. Just about everything we do is environmentally destructive as far as some people are concerned. Driving a car or boat, cooking a meal, charging your phone. AUSTRALIA has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. More than 15,000 cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year and over a million-non melanoma skin cancers are treated. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Australia. It’s a scary thought and even scarier is knowing fishos, like you and I, are prime candidates for this awful, but mostly preventable disease. We all spend considerable time in the sun and most of us have been doing so since a young age. I’m 43 and have had several non-melanoma skin cancers cut out; two from my neck and one from my leg. FRESHWATER impoundment and river fishos in the Central West are enjoying the best fishing in decades thanks to NSW DPI Fisheries freshwater stocking programs and the work of Central Acclimatisation Society volunteers. After recent rains filled storage dams, the water spilling over the walls has seen a return of natural flows to the river systems. The results are massive environmental benefits to the rivers below. The prolonged duration of natural flows and improved river health has had obvious benefits for both native fish and salmonoids stocked in the rivers over past years. The NSW DPI Dollar for Dollar Native Fish Restocking Program allows fishing groups to participate in stocking their local waterways by contributing money towards the purchase of native fish. AUSTRALIANS across all States and Territories are being encouraged to prepare their fishing gear for the 2023 PIRTEK Fishing Challenge. The challenge is an online national fishing competition open to all ages and experience levels. All competitors receive a limited-edition cap, brag mat and sticker with junior competitors receiving a bonus packet of Berkley soft plastics. This year’s Challenge will be a two-day event taking place on Saturday and Sunday April 22 and 23. Competitors will fish for their favourite species, photograph their catch on the brag mat with their angler number and codeword clearly visible; then upload the photos to the website for judging. Back in the ‘50s, ‘60s and early ‘70s before the Australian Government established a 200-mile (AFZ) offshore fishing zone in 1979, the Japanese commercial fishing fleet plundering a huge area of the Great Barrier Reef. They quickly discovered the southern reaches of the reef off Seventeen Seventy and Bundaberg was just as productive for marlin and tuna as the northern grounds off Cairns and Lizard Island. The first Aussie game fishermen to discover just how good these southern reef grounds really are, were the professional charter-boat fleet from NSW, the Gold Coast and Brisbane heading to Cairns and back for the spring-time, heavy tackle black marlin season. THERE’S no question about it, these past few wet years since the breaking of the drought in late 2019 has seen an explosion in the life cycle throughout nature and the whole ecosystem. Deserts have bloomed and the life cycle of the plants and animals that live in these dry regions take advantage of the wetter times to quickly reproduce before their environment becomes dry again. Shield shrimp eggs which have laid dormant on the top of Uluru spring into life with the first falls of rains on the rock. THE last couple of years I’ve marked the end of the trout season by fly fishing some tiny alpine creeks with my mate Sooty. It’s a style of fishing where downsizing both gear and waterway size brings maximum fun. At this time of year, especially in the Snowy Mountains, the bigger rivers and popular pools start to become ridiculously crowded as the spawn run gets underway and fly and spin fishers jockey for spots. In contrast, where the fishing took place on these last trips, Sooty and I were the only ones there. KINGFISH produce, at times, incredible topwater scenes and the heart in your mouth surges of a locked-up drag only adds to the exhilaration of the initial strike. To me, kingfish are formidable opponents on spin tackle. It is often said for good reason that, pound-for-pound, there are few, if any, fish in the sea more powerful. The reasons for using surface lures over other presentations are quite varied, but most anglers will use them when they can, because a strike on the surface from a fired up fish is very exciting. However, surface lures are undeniably effective in their own right. The Daly River in the Northern Territory is a big tidal river populated by crocodiles, anglers and big barramundi. I’ve spent a lot of time on this river and have seen it in all its moods. The river is constantly changing after each wet season where new snags appear and older ones wash away. I first fished the Daly in 1991, and since this time have spent nearly a year of my life on this fantastic wild river. During that time this dynamic river has moved considerably. When I first fished it there was a big snag near Alligator Heads hard up against the steep reedy bank.
