FISHING has many obvious economic and health benefits. We often hear them rolled out, usually during the process of defending rec fishing rights. Mostly we hear about the positive benefits to the economy, or the physical benefits that come with getting outside, and even eating seafood. TIGHT bag limits on sought after species has led some fishers to engage in upsizing, where smaller but legal length fish are retained alive but released if larger specimens are caught later in the fishing session. Be warned…if you’re caught with more than your bag limit even if you’re about to release some of your catch alive and healthy, you can still be fined, as a recent WA case shows. A recreational crayfish diver brought a bag of crays to his boat with the intention of releasing any that were undersized or exceeded his permitted bag limit of eight, after sorting and measuring, as his two mates had just done. There are tables known as Maori charts that predict the probability of catching fish at given times during the day and night. SYDNEY anglers are accusing wealthy waterfront apartment owners of waging a “class war” on people who just want to throw a line into Sydney Harbour. According to an article in the Daily Telegraph and as reported on Channel 9, the Walsh Bay Precinct Association is urging the NSW Government to ban all fishing off the wharves at Walsh Bay near Barangaroo. They have accused fishers of using the wharves as a toilet, leaving rubbish everywhere, talking too loudly, hurling abuse and shining lights into their multimillion-dollar apartments at 3am. The Association also claims people sitting at nearby cafes are scared they will be caught by a hook as anglers cast their lines. THE Fisheries Research & Development Corporation (FRDC) has released its final report on swordfish survival after release. After completion of a study employing satellite-linked tags, it concludes that swordfish are a relatively poor candidate for a catch-and-release-only species as they are subject to both deep-hooking and barotrauma. It suggests that fishers should be able to identify fish that are likely to survive but should also be prepared to dispatch fish that appear unlikely to live humanely, and prepare them appropriately for consumption, even if the intention of the fishing trip was to release fish. The report also notes that it’s likely that the recreational swordfish fishery in south-eastern Australia will expand, given current angler interest, but that swordfish targeting may remain a relatively niche activity when compared to other types…

The Queensland impoundments have provided some fantastic barra fishing for anglers over the past few decades. Many have caught that magical "metrey" fish in dams including Awoonga, Callide, Monduran, Peter Faust and Kinchant. In most dams, the good times are offset by quiet periods which can last for years. THE following column is about giving yourself the best chance to catch a variety of common fish species when they are either shut down or not responding to conventional methods. We all know situations where the fish are present but just won’t bite, and in general down-sizing lures, leader and mainline are good tactics for a variety of species. SPANISH MACKEREL While mackerel can be almost suicidal at times, when you are in heavily fished areas you have to be clever.
