The North Western quarter of our wide brown land is known for many things. The spectacular Kimberley and its almost spookily ancient landscape. The harsh and arid Pilbara with its vast iron ore deposits that kept the nation from economic collapse. Or the World Heritage listed marine wilderness of the Ningaloo Reef and its iconic whale shark aggregations. A customer of mine was after a 7ft rod, about 5–8kg, that was light enough to throw soft plastics or baits for the extended periods and still have the lower end power to fight fish in close. Also, it couldn’t be too heavy. That’s a big ask from one rod. The customer wanted his rod for his assault on the famous snapper of South Australia. Q WHAT TIDE IS BEST FOR CHASING FLATHEAD? Andrew e-mail A When I was young it was widely thought and believed the run out or falling tide was the best time to target flathead. This is true and many large flathead have been taken in areas adjacent to vast flats, bays or creek mouths where all the prawns, mullet and whiting must leave as the water gets too low and the flathead wait in ambush for an easy meal. Bass are like mice or cockroaches in a way. Just as these household invaders find their way into all manner of nooks and crannies, so to do bass get into skinny or remote waters. If there’s sufficient water bass will swim into it, and that means adventurous bass anglers won’t be far behind! Over the next year Fishing World will look back over magazines from the past 50 years. To kick things off we delve into the archives for a snapshot of the January 1972 edition. On the cover we see an "Untouched Top End stream and light tackle barramundi", a photo by John Turnbull featuring a wading fisho and a jumping barra on a light spin outfit. Not much has changed! 2018 marked the 25th year of this great tournament. From its inception it has grown into a massive event, this year hosting 290 teams. The 2018 event ran extremely well and was a credit to the organising committee. This year the event was held on quite big tides around the period of the full moon, which made the fishing quite challenging. In the period prior to the event the flathead had been sporadic in their appearances. There was a brief flurry of activity in the deep water in the period around the new moon prior to the event, but it was pretty clear to most of us pre-fishing the tournament that it would require a lot of planning and hard work to find consistent fish. One of fishing’s greatest appeals for me is the opportunity to continually learn new techniques and become competent at catching more sportfish species, particularly on lure and fly tackle. Heading inland to our freshwater impoundments to specifically target golden perch or yellowbelly as they’re more commonly known is something that’s become a bucket list item for me over the last two years. I’ve caught plenty of yellowbelly over the past 30 odd years, but always previously as by catch while chasing Australian bass or Murray cod. OFFSHORE ADVENTURES Tony Orton together with his wife, Bea and son Sam operate Offshore Adventures from Mangawhai Heads, about 1.5 hours north of Auckland. SURVEY any estuary system and you will find a number of productive fishing areas; shallow flats, rocky outcrops, holes and drop-offs are all examples of locations that can yield great results however an all-time favourite would have to be a shoreline or creek mouth dotted with mangroves. My first foray into luring bream a couple of decades back saw me travel far and wide to find land based estuary luring spots and without fail the most productive spots in the waterways I fished featured clusters of mangroves adjacent to where I was fishing.
