“For targeting dirty fighting rock dwellers there’s nothing better than a plain, non-drag sidecast.” KILOS of drag, multiple ball bearings, alloy bodies, waterproof cases, elliptical gearing, cast controls - all the features you’d expect to see discussed in an article about fishing reels in the 2010s… But, in fact, this article won’t mention them again. Instead, it’s going to look at the continued place in the modern angler’s armoury of the sidecast, arguably the type of casting reel with the longest continuous usage in Australia’s fishing history.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Sidecast reels were developed in Scotland, England and the USA during the 1800s, and quickly became popular. By 1900, the Scottish Malloch sidecasts were being sold in Australia and the first Aussie version, the Acme, was launched in 1913.…
