THE outer reefs of Queensland’s Coral Sea are one of the world’s last sport fishing frontiers. The sheer distance from land, tricky navigation, and unforgiving conditions make it a logistical nightmare for all but a few. Only the most prepared anglers or charter operators regularly fish these waters with success. Fisho writer David Green recently returned from a trip to Wreck Reef and encountered the kind of fishing most of us can only dream about. More on that trip on page 34. Coincidentally, not long after Greeny’s return to land, the Federal Coalition released its long-awaited draft management plan into the Federal Marine Parks. The WA Department of Fisheries has warned anglers not to leave squid lines unattended or they’ll face fines of between $200 and $2,000. Their compliance officers continue to find unattended lines, particularly in the Esperance area. Due to their effectiveness, multiple set lines can lead to squid being totally fished out of a particular area. Hooked squid can also act as bait for other squid or fish, which can in turn be hooked on the set-lines and potentially die. “If you’re a dreamer and like looking at maps, you soon realise that in the modern day there are very few truly remote places left where people are few and fish are abundant.” I HAVE been very fortunate in my fishing life to visit many remote places over the past decades, but for me the distant horizons have always been the most attractive. I was lucky to be a part of many exploratory trips in the mid 1980s and beyond aboard Seafari, skippered by Joe Wilkinson, to fish Cato Island, Wreck Reef, the Saumarez complex and Frederick Reef. THERE are a set of interconnected lakes near my house that were constructed over 40 years ago. The idea was to attract people who wanted a lakeside lifestyle. Back then the developers left green corridors and parkland, and pockets of bush for wildlife to survive. Over the years the need for additional living space has claimed most of the bushland and open areas. The area has grown into a densely populated cluster of suburbs with more high-rise apartments opening soon. Originally the lake was lined with she oaks and eucalyptus, but now boardwalks, concrete paths and lawns are common. There are many lakes just like these dotted along our coastal strip. A KINGFISH tagged and released in Port Hacking by John Taylforth on 1 October 2015 has recently been recaptured for the third time. This brings the number of times this fish has been caught to four, all in the space of 612 days! It was first tagged in October 2015 in Port Hacking at 70cm and was last caught off Jervis Bay in June at 100cm. ALL fishos should own a multi-tool. I own several and often have one handy whilst fishing. Of course they’re more than a fishing tool; as the name suggests, multi-tools have a multitude of uses around the home and for practically any application. They’re very useful gadgets! IF you’re a travelling angler and need to get on a plane, chances are you have been confronted with a massive pile of fishing gear and a luggage limit that just doesn’t allow you to take all the gear you want to. For some reason many of us are so lure obsessed that we will substitute shiny wonder lures for clothing, toiletries and shoes. I’ve done a fair bit of fishing travel and always find reducing my fishing tackle to make a weight limit particularly difficult. Over time I’ve found a few ways to get more efficient. I’ve always had a fascination with saratoga. I suppose it was their primeval features that first appealed to me. Their armoured gill plates, oversized scales and serpent-like flexibility make them a unique species and sets them apart from all other freshwater fish we have here in Australia. They certainly are the ancient fish of our northern river systems. I caught my first saratoga from Corroboree Billabong in the NT about 10 years ago, and I’ve enjoyed several trips to the Territory since. Saratoga are a cool species to target, and they live in some of the most spectacular waterways in all of Oz. A NEW Deloitte Access Economics report has calculated the total asset value of the Great Barrier Reef to be $56 billion, assessing the World Heritage site’s economic, social and iconic brand value together in one study for the first time. OVER the past few years my obsessive fishing compulsion has taken a back seat to raising kids and corporate life. Only now are things normalising – which means more time on the water. I’ve been spending time fishing with new people and one thing I’m always trying to explain is where to look to find fish. I fish the mighty Hawkesbury River system and it’s very typical of any large East Coast river. It’s a diverse system with huge bays, tributaries, submerged valleys and feeder creeks. As such, someone new launching into the river may see potential everywhere they look. Nearly every square inch of the Hawkesbury shoreline from Broken Bay to Windsor looks fishy.
