FAST FLEET MOTORBASE FOCUS BTCC POINTS HAUL The Motorbase team earned a valuable points haul at Knockhill recently… After showing promise at both Snetterton and Thruxton in previous rounds, we headed to Knockhill confident of delivering a great performance that was sure to yield the rewards our pace deserved. FF TECH ALL ABOUT PERFORMANCE HOSES & FITTINGS Far from just looking pretty, performance hoses and fittings play a crucial part in a car’s reliability, especially on performance tuned cars where the limits of the standard components are easily exceeded… All cars require several vital fluids to operate correctly; oil, water, fuel, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and so on… But the hoses used to transfer these fluids from one component to another, and the fittings used to keep those hoses in place, can impose limitations on the vehicle’s performance. When we start asking the engine to pump more oil at a higher pressure, shift larger volumes fuel more quickly, and generally withstand the greater stresses and strains experienced in a performance tuned car, the limits of the original rubber hoses…

HOW TO INSTALL PTFE HOSE FITTINGS 1 Cut the hose using masking tape to protect the ends and give accurate measurement. 2 Ensure the hose is round by gently squeezing with pliers. At this stage slide the hose end socket nut over the hose. Insert the hose end into the hose to ensure the I.D. is round. 3 Using a small pick gently pull the stainless steel braid away from the PTFE core all the way around. Care should be taken to ensure the PTFE core is not damaged in any way. 4 Push the olive/ ferrule onto the end of the core and under the braid. Inspect to ensure the core butts up squarely and fully against the inside shoulder of the ferrule. 5 Lubricate both the fitting and…

DASH SYSTEM The industry standard measurement for hose and fitting size is known as the ‘dash’ system, expressed with ‘-’ symbol before the relevant number. This system originates from the aerospace industry and used to refer to the JIC thread rate of the male fittings to which the hose is attached. For example, a -03 fitting was traditionally a 3/8x24 JIC thread rate, but as the range grew more extensive, and the number of different options available became more complex, the dash system became outdated as a standard industry guide. The name ‘dash system’ still lives on, but in truth there are too many different options currently available for it to have any real relevance, and many manufacturers have their own systems. IN THE SPOTLIGHT ALAN BOULTON FIESTA ST Alan’s relatively stock-looking Fiesta has what he describes as ‘an archaeological history’, having been through mountune and Pumaspeed tuning guises before the current Collins Performance setup. A bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, he’s owned it for around five years and the spec now is outstanding: among its myriad treats it features a Turbo Technics S280 turbo, ITG induction, Airtec Stage 3 intercooler, bigger injectors, and a Milltek non-res cat-back with 200-cell sport cat. HOW TO INSTALL RUBBER NITRILE HOSE FITTINGS 1 Measure the hose length required accurately, making sure to allow for the portion of the hose that will be inserted into the union. Wrap the hose with some masking tape at the point where it is to be cut and then mark accurately with pencil the cutting line. The masking tape will also act as protection for the braid and minimize fraying. 2 Push the outer socket over the cut hose end, using a twisting motion as needed and avoid allowing any braid to the outside of the fixing. The hose should sit in the socket with its end level with the back of the socket’s thread. 3 Wrap masking tape around the hose just behind the socket. This will allow you…
