FOCUS IN MOTORSPORT McRae. Sainz. Grönholm. Big names in the rally world, and big winners in the Focus WRC. Having less in common with a road-going Focus than previous rally-winning Cossies, the Focus WRC competed from 1999 to 2010, taking 44 victories and two manufacturers’ world championship crowns (in 2006 and ’07). Running permanent four-wheel drive, the Focus WRC was built by M-Sport around a basic Focus-shaped bodyshell and very little else. Yes, the engine was loosely based on a two-litre Duratec, but turbocharged to produce 300bhp (restricted) and well over 400lb.ft torque, it transmitted grunt through a sequential gearbox and active differentials to hit 60mph in around four seconds. Mk1 and Mk2-shaped generations of Focus WRC were produced, with each car gaining wider and wilder wings. They were replaced…

WHAT’S NEXT? Though the Fiesta is now complete, the pair won’t be stepping away from the fast Ford scene any time soon. Stuart has been creating project cars ever since he handbuilt an engine for his Escort 1600 Sport in 1978, and John has owned almost every RS going. There’s a serious Transit Custom planned for later this year, and a 500bhp new Focus has been mooted, but next on their to do list a S550 Mustang 5.0 convertible. It’s already gained forged Shelby alloys, flip paint and a custom interior but the biggest mod is waiting to be fitted: a Roush supercharger that should deliver over 700bhp. “We like to push to the limits and throw away the rule book,” John smiles. TWIN-SCREW SUPERCHARGER While most turbos work in exactly the same way, there are actually several different types of supercharger. The twin-screw type fitted to David’s Mustang is arguably the ‘best’, in the sense it produces instant power with minimal amounts of extra heat. It’s just usually the most expensive route. A twin-screw ‘charger features a big chamber filled with two large rotating screws. Air is pulled in by one and compressed by the twisting action, as the two screws mesh together. The compressed air is then pushed out by the second screw and into the engine (or intercooler first). The upsides are great efficiency and a wide powerband. The main downside is cost. Other popular superchargers include the Roots-type (such as an Eaton), which produce a wide powerband but can…

Jamie spends a couple of days at mountune HQ while the RS is kitted out with the highly-acclaimed Quaife ATB… This month has seen one of the biggest upgrades yet fitted to the RS – a Quaife ATB. The debate rages on as to whether the Mk3 should have come with one from the factory like the previous RS versions of the Focus, but leaving that aside for a second, the only thing that really matters is getting one in your car. IN THE SPOTLIGHT JOHN PECK ESCORT COSWORTH John’s Bastos-liveried Escort Cosworth rally car was definitely one of the most eye-catching cars at the entire event. It certainly attracted some of the biggest crowds – especially when John popped the bonnet or fired up the YB within. Why? Because this thing is a pukka Group A rally weapon. “We’ve just finished rebuilding it,” John explains, “and we plan to attack some Tarmac rallies in it later in the year.” John and his team have recently gone through the whole car from top to tail, and the fully recommissioned machine is now ready to hit the Tarmac. The rebuild saw every aspect of the car reinstated as full Group A spec, including that ferocious YB powerplant and the incredibly expensive and hard-to-source…

WHAT IS AN ATB? There are many different types of limited-slip differential available, and all try to achieve the same goal – to maximise the available amount of traction at each driven wheel. ATBs (Automatic Torque Biasing) units are the least harsh of all LSD types, because they never lock. A complex arrangement of the sun and planet gears means that when one wheel starts to slip, the torque is biased away from that wheel. The most famous ATB diff is that made by UK engineering company, Quaife, although some OE manufacturers and other transmission specialists offer similar products. An ATB diff may look complicated, but the principal behind how it works is actually quite simple. Rather than relying on friction plates to operate, an ATB unit uses gears to…

FITTING GUIDE ON SHORT SHIFTER COMING SOON… WORTHWHILE EXTRAS As you can see from the photos, fitting the ATB is a labour-intensive job that requires the gearbox to be removed. So, while the gearbox is out it makes perfect sense to take the opportunity to fit a few extra upgrades now that everything is easy to access. It would be foolish to pay unnecessary labour charges to fit these parts at a later date when installation at this point would barely increase the labour time of the original job! That’s why we opted to replace the original PTU mount with one of mountune’s alloy upgrades. As torque and power are increased, the OE PTU casing has been known to fail due to torsional load and strain caused from hard launches…

SHOW GUIDE 2018 MOUNTUNE Let’s take a closer look at mountune’s long and illustrious relationship with fast Fords... Mountune was founded by David Mountain back in 1980, initially supplying race engines for Minis. Towards the end of the ’80s the company started building the legendary Cosworth YB engines for the Sierra RS500 touring cars, before turning their attention to the WRC Escort Cosworth programme throughout the 90s. MARK ESCORT COSWORTH READY FOR ACTION! The EsCos track build nears an end, and Mark is looking forward to tearing up the track later in the summer! After having a few issues with the wastegate while on the rollers last month, this month I’m pleased to say the Escort Cossie is back to full health. I ordered a new TiAL wastegate (I knew I should have stuck with the brand I’ve known and trusted for years!) and the car was booked in for another mapping session with Mark Shead at MA Developments. FORD HEROES RUDI EGGENBERGER The man responsible for some of the greatest Touring Cars the world has ever seen was a true Ford hero... Eggenberger Motorsport represents an exciting chapter in Ford’s racing history. The Swiss team competed in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) through the 1980s, but it’s 1986 when it gets really interesting for us. This was the year in which Eggenberger Motorsport switched to being the official Ford factory team, initially running the Sierra XR4Ti and Cosworth, then moving to the boxfresh Sierra RS500 in 1987. TURBOSYSTEMS CARS Even if you don’t know who Turbosystems are, there’s a strong possibility you will have seen a fast Ford wearing those iconic tiger stripes that are synonymous with the Stoke-based tuning company. Indeed, nearly every RS Turbo or Cossie on the road sported the obligatory ‘Turbosystems’ sunstrip back in the day! Turbosystems were the go-to tuners for Cossies during the 90s, and they’ve had a hand in numerous cars over the years.
