So, a lot has changed in the last month. We’re in the middle of a worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. As I type these words, we’re still very much in lockdown but hopefully some of the restrictions will have been lifted by the time you read the magazine. I mentioned last month about the challenges we face at Fast Car, like shooting feature cars. Loud pipes save lives, everybody knows that. And the exhaust Mark used to run on his S15 was several levels beyond loud: a full Kakimoto system that operated at stadium-sized decibel levels. Kakimoto Racing was founded back in 1975, and they’ve been making free-flowing race pipes and race-derived street systems ever since… although it has to be said that the barely-silenced exhaust they make for the S15 isn’t exactly suited to urban day-to-day use in the UK. “When I started the car up, it used to rattle the plates in the kitchen,” he grins, “and it scared the neighbour’s cat half to death. What’s the best type of headlight? Halogen? LED? Xenon? Nope, it’s a headlight where the beam actually shines through onto the bloody tarmac! Faded plastic headlights not only dull and diffract the light improperly, making them extremely dangerous all round (and often an MOT failure), but they always make your car look… well, a bit shit. There aren’t a lot of road cars running V10s, in the grand scheme of things. You can pretty much count the models on your fingers – there’s the Porsche Carrera GT, Lexus LFA, E60-generation BMW M5, Dodge Viper, and a handful of others. But the car that really took this obscure engine format mainstream was the Lamborghini Gallardo. This Celica may be packing a V8, but it’s no agricultural Detroit pushrod. No, the 1UZ-FE is an advanced, hyperactive and super-smooth design used by Lexus for an impressive 24 years, from 1989 to 2013. It saw a number of evolutions over that period; at launch, it was used in the LS400/Toyota Celsior – a 4.0-litre 32-valve quad-cam V8 with steel rods and crank and hypereutectic pistons. The layout has proper race car DNA, as it was designed on a platform based on CART racing engines – hence its oversquare configuration. When the second-gen LS400 launched in 1995, the 1UZ-FE was revised with lighter pistons and rods and a raised compression ratio, resulting in 265bhp and 269lb.ft. TeckWrap is a growing name in the field of vehicle wraps, as the company offers high-tech vinyls at affordable prices. They’ve got the full spectrum of finishes, from matte and gloss to eggshell, metallic and aluminium, but our favourite part is the colour names: you can see that Niki’s car is wearing Coral Peach, which is a fairly descriptive title, but there’s a whole host of madness in the TeckWrap catalogue.
