I’m a fat non-binary Black person, and my personal style has been complicated. In my late teens and early 20s, when I identified as straight and cisgender, my style was deeply, deeply feminine—think Katy Perry circa her debut album. I had a penchant for 1950s-inspired fit-and-flare outfits, carefully showcasing my body in “the right way” (read “as a woman”). When I came out as queer and pansexual, and then later as non-binary, it was deeply confronting—it felt like an existential style crisis! Gregory Grist doesn’t need glasses. At least, not really. “My prescription is so negligible that they just prevent me from having headaches,” he laughs. He hails from Zolani, a South African farming township east of Cape Town, where his natural rhythm captivated a visiting Canadian family when he was a child. The serendipitous encounter led to an audition for Canada’s National Ballet School, and at the age of 12, the young talent was accepted into the prestigious academy on a full scholarship, leaving his mother and siblings behind. November joined The National Ballet of Canada upon graduation and in 2021, at age 22, was promoted to principal dancer, making him one of the youngest principal dancers and only the second Black one in the company’s 72-year history. Ann Korman, jewellery designer and founder of ARK, worked in editorial and styling in New York before getting a master’s degree in art and becoming a painter. She also studied Kabbalah, Buddhism and meditation, and it was on a quest in India to deepen her spiritual knowledge that she discovered another passion: jewellery. At her home studio in Los Angeles, Korman starts her lengthy process by painting watercolours of images such as the mandala—the symbol of the universe—which inspired the earrings shown here. Once she has the design and colours for a new piece perfected, the artwork comes alive, though not at any great pace.
