You ever drive past a place so many times that you kind of forget it’s there? When I was in college, I drove on I-70 through Illinois so many times that very few locations stick out in my mind. One such location I never paid much attention to was the American Farm Heritage Museum in Green-ville, Illinois. Before I started at Farm Collector, I didn’t pay it any mind. I wore bib overalls to school and around the farm until I was probably 12 or 13 years old. Then, considering myself quite grown up, I insisted on Levi’s and wore them all through high school (Mom didn’t complain because Levi’s were cheap) and up until I left for the Army. Way back in 1991, my wife and I decided to visit some new-to-us engine shows. We had heard good things about the show in Sycamore, Illinois, so we decided to give it a try. The show didn’t disappoint, and we saw several engines, tractors and steamers that we hadn’t before. Of the unique engines seen, one really stood out: a Challenge upright with auxiliary hopper cooling. I captured a photograph, and made a mental note to place a Challenge upright in my wish list. Barn Building Memories The article on “Barn Moving 101” in Volume 27, Issue 3, of the Farm Collector reminded me of my father’s barn near Northwood, ND. It was similar in style to the one pictured in the article. It measured 32 feet wide, 35 feet high, and 60 feet long. He hired a crew to move it about a mile from a farm he had just purchased. They jacked it up, put huge timbers under it (about 12 inches square, if I remember accurately). They loaded the front on an Army style all-wheel drive truck and the rear on two dollies, each with 4 truck tires. A rare gem is incredibly hard to find. As the quantity becomes more limited, the value increases. This concept applies whether we’re discussing a gem or a unique farm collectable. Ervin Yoder can attest to this challenge through his assemblage of farm collectibles. “I’ve always had an interest in old rare farm items. When our family was young and growing, collecting was limited. Now that they’re living on their own, I’m able to collect more. Over time, my interest has shifted to the rare and unusual. New-Way had a unique way of identifying their engines. Engines are classified first by the “Series” of engine. The S-Series was the first, introduced in 1905. They are heavy-duty and hit-and-miss governed engines. New-Way made many advances in their design throughout production. In 1916, the F-Series was introduced to better serve the agricultural market, specifically as a power plant for horse-drawn binders. The F-Series engines were still cooled by the same belt-driven propeller fan as their predecessors, but also possessed the advancements of a true automotive-type Holley Brothers carburetor and throttle governing (1).
