La Lajas Cathedral, Ipiales, Colombia
This Colombian cathedral, also known as La Lajas Sanctuary , is a breathtaking sight. Part bridge, and part place of worship, the sanctuary sits precariously perched over a gorge. It was built between 1916 and 1949, financed by local churchgoers, and the challenging location was chosen as it had been the site of two miraculous recoveries in the 18th century, guided by the Virgin Mary.
