For Yasmina Hammound and Labib Kaddoura, creating a child-friendly, elegant and ergonomic kitchen in their five-bedroom Victorian terraced house in West London was essential. After buying the eye-catching property they now live in with their two young children, the couple set about making plans for a basement extension that would burrow down five metres and add around 600 square feet. They decided to remodel the kitchen and reception area on the ground floor, adding a new skylight and garden doors to make the space bright and create a harmonious flow from inside to out. ‘The kitchen is the most important space in our home as it’s where we spend most of our time,’ says Yasmina, ‘we wanted something that feels light, beautiful and happy, yet is highly functional. Can you tell us a bit about the finishes used here? We wanted a design that was modern but still sympathetic to the classic character of the house, so Shaker-style doors and a French Grey finish were chosen for their timeless qualities. We supplied the worktops, glass splashback and wooden flooring. All the materials are very light and neutral, and create a harmonious feel. The reflective splashback bounces light around the space, making it visually appear larger. The same goes for the skylights, which add much-needed extra natural light into the space. The colours in the Vitra chairs bring pops of personality and playfulness to the interior.
