Given the quality of her past scripts (including an Oscar nomination for Straight Outta Compton), Andrea Berloff’s directorial debut is sadly lacking, speeding through scenes as if half the movie is a montage and, after last year’s Widows, feeling familiar. That’s no fault of the actors, who give chewy, affecting performances (Haddish steps winningly out of her comedy comfort zone), it’s just that the story of three women who look to fill the power vacuum left by their jailed mobster husbands never gels.
