Next year is the 30th anniversary of the graduate showcase initiated by The Embroiderers’ Guild and The Knitting and Stitching Shows. Over three decades it has provided a showcase for more than 400 graduates and scholars, and now we are trying to reach all of them to register their interest in showcasing their work again. We want to celebrate their successes and demonstrate to students and parents that there is an exciting career out there for creative textile artists. Many people have a stereotypical understanding of embroidery, and we want to show visitors there is a host of creative routes that can be pursued. ‘I COME FROM a large artistic and creative family and as the youngest of 13 children have been immersed in the world of textiles since an early age. My grandmother and great-grandmother were cotton weavers. Both my mother and father were keen craftspeople and my siblings are still very much into art and traditional crafts, from dressmaking and knitting Aran jumpers to wood-carving and painting. Now their children are artists in their own right, keeping arts and crafts alive within our family. One of my fondest memories is watching my mother sewing on a pedal Singer machine. THE NATURAL world has long been an inspiration for artists. The Hand & Lock Prize 2022 asked entrants to take inspiration from the power of nature – evolution, adaptation, biomimicry, texture, colour, craft and sustainable practices. ‘Be innovative and imagine a future where humans learn from nature to live in harmony with nature,’ entrants were advised by the brief. Most of us have a relationship with biomimicry of which we may not be aware. It is the practice of learning from and mimicking the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges. Gasps, cheers and whoops erupted from the audience as the UAL’s (University of the Arts London) chancellor, Grayson Perry, serenely walked down the aisle of Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in July for the first of many graduation ceremonies to come. This was the first time friends, family and academics had seen the resplendent student-designed robes, a fantastic fusion of embroidery, knitting, crochet, beading, stitching, handcrafting and weaving, culminating in a long train, trailing metres behind the Turner Prize-winning artist. Each year a competition is held to design the robes worn by the chancellor, an opportunity for thousands of aspiring students to design and make a once-in-a-lifetime outfit and win £1,000 to bring their design to life. The new exhibition Hand Me Downs is bringing Annie Montgomerie’s wonderland of textile characters to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Montgomerie is no secret; she has been making for many years and has a lot of people watching her do it on Facebook and Instagram. But her work is lesser-spotted in exhibitions. Hand Me Downs will be a rare opportunity to admire her work up close for those of us who aren’t lucky enough to own a piece. She has history with Yorkshire Sculpture Park but this exhibition will present her largest cast assembled there yet. Montgomerie’s work is something you either get, or you don’t. My studio is a bright room attached to my 17th century cottage, with a door opening on to a courtyard garden, which I use as an extension of my workroom. With beams overhead, the studio has lots of storage in the form of fabric-covered boxes, with books and antique artefacts to inspire me. I spend as much time as I can in my garden and love to explore the beautiful countryside on our doorstep. I enjoy visiting open gardens and stately homes, and when I am in London, one of my favourite places is the Victoria and Albert Museum. I also find plenty of inspiration online with Instagram and Pinterest. I have loved fabrics and the textures and forms that can be achieved with embroidery since I was a child.…

THERE’S SOMETHING VERY SATISFYING about encountering a lone artwork in a gallery space. As with Farwa Moledina’s Women of Paradise exhibit at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery, one’s focus is centred on one object and there’s time to sit and see where it takes you. For a former Victorian school, the Ikon is full of light; indeed, the stair wells leading up to the Tower Gallery give the illusion, reinforced by the transparency of the stair treads, that one is walking on air. It’s a meandering, up and down journey to the space and then when you get there its smallness is a shock (more than three people in there at one time is a squeeze). Simone Elizabeth Saunders: u.n.i.t.y. is on show at The Textile Museum of Canada until 29 January. Evoking personal history, Afro diaspora and black sisterhood, Saunders creates portraits with bold and colourful textiles. Her dramatic tufted works incorporate motifs from her Jamaican heritage and engage with socio-cultural factors to reclaim power from oppressive ideologies. Saunders’ background in theatre arts informs her practice, as she integrates dramatism and story-telling within her creations. Saunders has only recently embraced textile art, but her great-grandfather in Jamaica was an affluent tailor. Inspired by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, Four Queens, 2020, sees black women take poses similar to those in Mucha’s Precious Stones (1900) but gaze directly at viewers as embodiments of Black Power, Dreams, Magic and Love. The Embroiderers Guild graduate showcase started in the early 1990s, alongside a showcase for knitting graduates at The Knitting and Stitching Shows (KSS). The organisations caring for embroidery and knitting selected the most promising graduates and Twisted Threads of the Knitting and Stitching Shows provided free exhibition space at Alexandra Palace, Harrogate and Dublin. The idea was to showcase the best textile graduates so their work would become more widely known, and celebrated, across the UK. The initial knitting and stitching events were suppliers’ shows, but there had never been a show before which exposed textile enthusiasts to such a wide variety of inspiration, including the work of established artists and groups, specialist collectors and booksellers, plus exhibitions. The shows soon became the ‘must see’ event in the annual calendar.…

▝ Jessica Grady graduated from Norwich University of the Arts in 2014 and is an artist, designer and tutor who exhibits, teaches and speaks about her creative practice across the UK and beyond. Her work is inspired by colour and pattern and celebrates the joy of stitch and recycling. Sohee Park, known as Miss Sohee, is a womenswear designer based in London. Enthralled by the feeling of escapism that illustrating granted her, Park began to translate her sketches from the page into real life to create vibrant silhouettes that she defines as ‘demi-couture’. Her graduation collection, The Girl In Full Bloom, was inspired by the concept of evolution from girl to woman, in parallel with the designer’s own transition and her progression from illustration to design. A visual trip round China With 698 illustrations, China Adorned is marketed as a ‘visual encyclopaedia’. Drawing on more than three decades of research by cultural anthropologist Professor Deng Qiyao, the book tantalises us by noting there are 56 officially-recognised ethnic groups in China’s countryside, each with their own style of richly embellished dress. In the thought-provoking introduction, the professor remembers one of his first research visits to a Miao village in Yunnan, where is asked by an elderly man, ‘Can you read?’ The author is dumbfounded until the old man points to a young girl wearing traditional garb and says, ‘Our ancestral heritage is written here.’ The professsor only briefly discusses the symbolism of this region’s clothing: in this Miao village, where beautiful designs are both embroidered and printed…
