WHAT IT IS Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an in-offce procedure to treat stubborn acne, especially the cystic and inflammatory types. The practitioner first applies a form of aminolevulinic acid—usually Levulan Kerastick or Ameluz—that’s absorbed by acne-causing oil glands. The patient is then exposed to bright light to activate the medication. Both work to shrink oil glands, leading to fewer breakouts. Traditionally, patients have been treated with blue light, but according to research by New York dermatologist Macrene Alexiades, MD, PhD, published in the Journal of Drugs in Derma tology, red light is better at targeting acne. “After Accutane, it’s actually the strongest treatment that exists right now,” says Alexiades, who notes that PDT can be used on teens as well as adults, and at any time during the breakout cycle.…
