Decorating, in some ways, is like dating. At least according to Rita Konig. When the Elle Decor A-List designer first meets a new client, she embarks on what she calls a “stealth speed-dating exercise.” Even while she’s working on room plans, she’s also gleaning how her latest partners (in design) want to live, how they want to entertain, and how their families play, study, relax, and work in their home. The grocery store came first, before the house, the husband, the baby. When the chef and cookbook author Alison Roman closed on the building that would become First Bloom, her debut retail venture, in the Catskills town of Bloomville, New York, it was a local pizza parlor. The store’s opening, in 2023, marked a moment when Roman—who chronicles her life and cooking for a million-odd followers across Instagram, YouTube, and Substack—needed something for herself. A Los Angeles native, Roman started her career as a line chef and rose to prominence developing recipes for Bon Appétit and as a columnist for the New York Times. From the outside this summer home looks like your average well-heeled Southampton retreat, with cedar shingles, white trim, and a well-landscaped lawn. “With many of those houses you can imagine going in and knowing what you’re going to get,” says Elle Decor A-List designer Ghislaine Viñas. The sky-blue front door, however, hints at something more intriguing inside than white-on-beige-on-white. Viñas wanted the space to “put a smile on your face as soon as you walk through that door,” she says. What other delights might you discover inside? INGREDIENTS “The heart of the house, as cliché as it sounds, is 100 percent the kitchen,” Chris Mitchell says of the rear-parlor-turned-canteen of the historic Brooklyn townhouse he shares with his wife, Oprah Daily editorial director Pilar Guzmán.
