EAT DREAMING IN ITALIAN With its iron-and-glass winter garden, soaring mid-19th-century rooms, and punk-meets-Portaluppi decor, the new Milanese restaurant and bar Sogni has a transporting ambience. It is by design: In Italian, Sogni means “dreams,” and this ambitious eatery was indeed a longtime dream for its owner, Milanese fashion retailer Claudio Antonioli. He tapped Storage Milano, an architecture firm that also manages his store interiors, to preside over a renovation of the building, formerly a kindergarten. “The desire was to create a place as if it had always existed,” says architect Barbara Ghidoni. She collaborated with Antonioli on every aspect of the decor—from the velvet floral sofas in the entry lounge to the iron-and-brass lanterns and wood-and-zinc bar. If you were building a new house or gutting an old one and could drastically reduce energy use, enhance indoor air quality, and contribute to a greener future, would you do it? When Eric Egan began a renovation of his Milan apartment, he looked to hotel design for inspiration. After all, through his firm L’Artigianato, Egan is the man behind the decor of some of the world’s most beautiful hotel rooms—from those at the Mandarin Oriental in Lake Como to the Dogaressa suite at the Hotel Cipriani in Venice. And since he spends only part of the year in Milan—he has another home in Punta del Este, Uruguay, the hometown of his husband, Diego Cuña, and projects that have him hopping from New York City to Paris—it made sense to think of his Italian apartment as a pied-à-terre. “Much like a hotel suite, it is really for my personal use,” he says. “When I entertain, I do so in our showroom down…

In May 2005, a Sheila Bridges project graced the cover of this magazine for the first time. The story featured her own Harlem apartment. “It came out during a time of deep introspection,” recalls the designer, now an ELLE DECOR A-List Titan. “I’ve learned that for artists, moments of self-reflection can be highly creative.” Sure enough, the following year she debuted Harlem Toile, her now iconic pattern that has appeared on everything from wallpaper to Converse sneakers. About a century ago, Italian designer Renzo Frau thought up the Vanity Fair armchair—a joy-fully plump design that would come to define his namesake brand, Poltrona Frau (and would later appear on this magazine’s very first cover, in 1989). In the 1940s, Milanese artist Piero Fornasetti founded his eponymous label, producing black-and-white illustrations that are still prized in home decor. Now, for the first time, these two legacies have merged, resulting in a limited-edition Vanity Fair armchair upholstered in archival Fornasetti prints. The pattern, which features a beaming sun and swirling clouds, was originally conceived by Fornasetti in the 1950s. Its whimsical design elements were a perfect match for Vanity Fair’s playful yet time-less silhouette. “When I sat on the armchair, I felt as if I was on a cloud,”…

Long before Alfredo Paredes had set foot in the Long Island, New York, residence he would come to call home, he knew it was the one—and he was prepared. “I had a Saint Joseph in my back pocket,” Paredes says, referring to the Catholic figure who is said to look after homebuyers. “I swear it works.” To coax Paredes, an ELLE DECOR A-List designer, and his husband, writer Brad Goldfarb, and their two children, Carolina and Sebastian, away from the sun-drenched East Village duplex they called home, the property would have to be special. Built in 1929, the mansion is the work of one of Paredes’s favorite architects, Harrie T. Lindeberg, known for crafting graceful country estates for wealthy New Yorkers in the early 20th century.
