A fashion-savvy home decorating magazine for the new generation of design professionals and consumers who know exactly what they want, ELLE DECOR covers fashionable and inspirational products that bring couture chic to every room of your home.
IN THE 13 YEARS SINCE INSTAGRAM SWALLOWED VISUAL CULTURE whole, there’s been concern in interior design circles that the social media age has led to an era of suffocating aesthetic sameness. Too often, the importance of physical location is diminished in favor of decorative moves designed only to get our attention. Team ELLE DECOR likes to think of our Cities Issue as an antidote to all that monoculture. Don’t get me wrong: This isn’t an exhaustive global survey of what’s new in interior design. Rather, we’re taking a closer look at projects in metropolitan centers that feel very much of their place. Take, for instance, our cover story on a home in the Hollywood Hills. With interiors by ELLE DECOR A-List talent Andre Mellone and architecture by Woods + Dangaran,…
SHOP: NEW YORK CITY Renaissance-inspired jewelry designer Temple St. Clair describes the design details of her new boutique in Manhattan’s West Village as “a tale of two cities”—New York and Florence. For the main space, Florentine artisans who have worked on her collections for decades were tapped to create such display elements as glass vitrines and brass cabinet pulls; these flourishes evoke the handcrafted sensibility of the pieces in her collections. But the shop, which is awash in a custom shade of blue, also has what St. Clair describes as a feeling of “modernity” and “airiness” befitting a retail space in New York. And, just like the city, it won’t stay the same for long. “This place is evolving,” she says. —Asad Syrkett templestclair.com STAY: VENICE Italy’s City of Canals…

Any biography of the legendary jeweler Harry Winston focuses on the historic diamonds that passed through his hands: the Hope! The Lesotho! The Jonker! But perhaps the greatest jewel in his life was New York City. His eponymous house honors his devotion to his hometown with a collection inspired by Gotham, translating its landmarks into astonishing high-jewelry pieces. Take, for instance, this remarkable necklace, which reimagines Manhattanhenge—the twice-yearly spectacle that occurs when the setting sun aligns precisely with the island’s east-to-west streets—as a collar of perfectly symmetrical diamonds and pear-shaped spessartites. It’s proof that the house founded by the King of Diamonds has an equally deft hand with colored gemstones.…

The location of the new International African American Museum, which debuted in June in Charleston, South Carolina, is no coincidence. Situated on Gadsden’s Wharf, the largest point of entry for enslaved Africans in American history, the museum is charged with their presence, the fear and squalor of their transport, and the hard-won liberation of their descendants. Misery may permeate the grounds, but today it is also a beacon of hope. Designed by the architects Curt Moody and the late Henry N. Cobb, the bridgelike museum is filled with artifacts, art, and archival materials mapping the purchase, transportation, and lives of America’s enslaved community. Also on the grounds is the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, designed by the award-winning landscape firm Hood Design Studio. “We wanted the site to be solemn at…
