In Darryl Carter’s world, there’s always a distinct pulse thrumming beneath what immediately meets the eye. The Washington, D.C.–based interior designer and ELLE DECOR A-List Titan has spent the past few decades creating traditional spaces in untraditional ways. Recently, he collaborated with architect Anne Decker to design a home with character and historical context for a young family of five in Virginia. Some spaces dazzle with their opulence. Others dazzle with their simplicity, eliciting a longed-for sense of quietude or a reconnection to some of the more essential facets of life. The latter was the case for designer Carol Egan when she first saw the Amagansett, New York, property that would become her home. “I had a complete reaction to the building,” she says of the minimalist structure, a 1,000-square-foot rectangle with glass walls. “And when I walked into the garden, it was a done deal.” Although simple in execution, the barely there construction was the result of deep contemplation. Deer Valley, a resort tucked into Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, is known for its towering pines and world-class slopes. For Julia DeWahl and Dan Romero, a pair of ski enthusiasts based in Venice, California, and their two young children, it became a second home once they came across a chalet with Swiss and Bavarian influences; the house’s stone facade and ornately carved wooden balconies evoked memories of winter escapes to Northern Europe. Houses can be like the heart—sometimes it takes another chance encounter to fall in love. So it went for Leila Brink and Niels van Beusichem, a Dutch couple in London, who decided in 2018 that, because of Brexit, they should return with their three children to the continent. They chose Paris because it was close to their summer place on Île de Ré on the French Atlantic coast, and it would be easy for van Beusichem, a banker, to relocate for work. When a Manhattan apartment designed by ELLE DECOR A-List architect Michael K. Chen graced the cover of our January/February 2021 issue, he couldn’t have known that some two years later it would inspire a collection of modular seating and rugs. But one piece in the story caught the eye of Tariq Dixon, cofounder of the local design studio and retailer TRNK: a striking chaise longue that was neither “too midcentury nor too marshmallow,” Chen says. When Tom Healy, a writer and educator, and Fred Hochberg, a former businessman and government official, received an unexpected offer on their Miami house, it proved too good to pass up. They accepted and took the sale as an opportunity to downsize—to a luxurious floor-through apartment in South Beach that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.
