PICTURE FOR A MOMENT AN 18TH-CENTURY European nobleman cutting open a pomegranate newly arrived from overseas. The deep-red fruit would have been as valuable as the silk covering his walls. Some 200 years later, such a sumptuous scene inspired philanthropist and decorator Ann Getty, who, with her husband, classical composer Gordon, built a collection of fine antique decorative objects over a span of 40 years. This October, two years after Ann’s death, Christie’s will feature an auction of some of the couple’s beloved pieces. VISIT PATTERN PALACE The Portuguese town of E´vora, a UNESCO world heritage site, is known for its tilework and the Roman temple of Diana. But the capital of the Alentejo region now has another spectacular feature: colorful geometric murals by the South African artist Esther Mahlangu. First commissioned for an exhibition in 2018 at the Cadaval Palace, a 14th-century residence of the Duke of Cadaval, the abstract artworks now embellish Cavalariça E´vora, a dazzling new restaurant designed by Jacques Grange. The French interior designer complemented Mahlangu’s murals in the Ndebele tradition with a vibrant design: The ceiling is hand-painted in a black, yellow, and white motif, while the floor is covered in a zigzag mosaic—all overlooking an Andalusian-style courtyard by Louis Benech. The French clothing designer Agnès b doesn’t attend fashion week or advertise her brand—she likes to follow her own instincts. Since she opened her first store, in Paris in 1975, in what was once a butcher shop, her name has become synonymous with an inextricably Gallic look.
